After looking at Atal'Utek with farsight, my current crack theory is that Ulatek is a fel-based snake Loa.
The effects around the temple use a ton of poison, but *also* fel flames. Plus, Malacrass was a warlock as far back as TBC, and this would be the perfect explanation.

I like the premise of us not knowing exactly what Ulatek was yet, and Zul'jan having this desperate hope that he'll be validated in his hatred of their reliance on the loa.
It'll make the ultimate reveal great, no matter which one Ulatek ends up being.

Like Baal said, the story telling within this and the greater Ulatek plot of, "What the Amani did for all of Azeroth, defeating Kthix and ending the Aqir War, was a lie"..its so nasty and undermining.

Lots of interesting tablets about how Atal'Utek was built, and how even the act of sealing Ula'tek away was profane and cursed the souls of everyone involved.
I really do like that vibe of just fundamentally *cursed* actions to seal away a greater evil.

12.1 felt like a filler patch to get to Kithix, which is a filler patch.
Ulatek could have been a 12.0.5 and Kithix could have been 12.1 with 12.1.5 being us finding a route into the coreway.
What we got was ill planned.

Where instead we save Ulatek from Malacrass, and Zuljan becomes not a Loa Priest but rather a "Bokor" (IRL term) someone who specializes in the forbidden Loa and their dark magics (ie, a warlock).

I think the story would have been better served if Ulatek wasn't this Haranir crap but rather a wild god in her own right that had powers of Chaos same as other wild gods have other cosmic force powers.
