Like off the top of my head, Jerusalem has been conquered by: Romans, Crusaders, Rashidun, Ummayad & Abbasid Caliphates, Egypt, King David, Philistines, Assyrians, Babylonians, Ottomans, British, Persians, Greeks (Alexander), Hasmoneans, Byzantines... 5000 years of it.

There's many examples of that in history, but my favorite is when the visigoths got folded by the Ummayad caliphate because a lot of nobles switched sides through a "help us depose this asshole and we'll swear fealty to you" deal. It also ruins the 19th century "reconquista" revisionist narrative.

Some parallels with the former Ummayad mosques in Spain and the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul (although the closer Islamic analogue to the Temple Mount is probably the kaaba)

From the start in 2011, Friday prayer set the rythm of the uprising, with each new Friday treated as an occasion to protest and as a platform for new slogans and demands.

In Ummayad Place, fighters were firing celebratory gunfire into the air. Locals from around country gathered to celebrate & take photos with fighters.
Most were Syrian but we also saw a few foreign fighters. One was from Tatarstan in Russia but said he’d spent 8 years in Syria & planned to stay.
