Close, but unagi is sweeter. The eel from around here is smoked, too, though.
Trader Joe's occasionally had Matjes, not sure if they still sometimes do. That was fine, but not the same as fresh from the fish truck on the local market.

Oh yes, every place seems to have a specialty that you just cant get in a satisfying way elsewhere, so the more places I live the more I ruin myself for things that would have been fine before I knew better 😂 I’ve never had Matjes herring, and the only eel I’ve had is unagi sushi!

Baby Ink is a gluttonous little thing that hates being picked up. baby Unagi burr is very easily startled and finds comfort in clinging to legs for safety.

Stress level is such that when I was getting lunch (unagi-don) at a Japanese grocery store, I was like “wait, the signs are for sale too?” and she was like “Yeah, $8” and I decided that was worthwhile

🍽️ Unagi style mackerel and salad
I love the sauce you use for eel but eel is nearly impossible to come by here, and even then it would be very expensive. Mackerel is also a very fatty fish and tastes great with the caramelized unagi sauce.

Love these two freaks, the Mad Piano and Unagi the Eel are such terrifying baddies of the N64 era. Love your take on them, Unagi’s eyes are so scary and that smile has so much character. The Mad Piano looks great too, love those monstrous teeth and that big tongue
