In 1928, newlyweds Glen and Bessie Hyde tried to set a speed record through an undammed Colorado River in a homemade wooden scow. Rescuers found their boat upright and fully loaded. They were never seen again.

Isn’t that great? They were also instrumental in getting the Klamath undammed, which is bringing salmon back to the upper river spawning grounds. They continue habitat restoration along the banks as well. Huzzah!

Tribe Just a Signature Away from Recovering 1,100 Ancestral Acres Along Undammed Elwha River
20 years after a Washington state dam was slated for demolition, 1,100 acres of ecosystem along the Lower Elwha River is recovering, having lain muddy and dormant under the dam’s engorged reservoir for more than a century. And now, 171 years after the land left their hands, and 114 years after it was flooded, the […] The post Tribe Just a Signature Away from Recovering 1,100 Ancestral Acres Along Undammed Elwha River appeared first on Good News Network.

The Ipswich is a nice river, especially in its upper, undammed sections. We have a lot of nice little rivers here. I live literally across the street from one, the Shawsheen. It's industrialized in my neighborhood, but go upstream less than a mile and its nice.

Since the Klamath River was officially undammed in August 2024, 20,000 salmon have returned to its waters.

But the challenges these fish face are many and nuanced – water rights and drought being the two biggest.

[Commentary] A recent river disaster on the Tibetan Plateau serves as a severe warning against proposed hydropower projects on the Karnali, Nepal's last undammed river.

Gary Wockner and Megh Ale argue that keeping the Karnali free-flowing is vital for safety, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.
For wild rivers like the Karnali, Nepal’s disaster is a warning and an answer (commentary)
Recently, a glacial collapse on the Tibetan Plateau sent a wall of water and debris roaring across the Nepal-China border. As of this publication, more than 1,000 people are confirmed dead and over…

Plenary talk of Gabriel Singer (University of Innsbruck) at #DGL2026 about "Catalyzing engaged river science at large scales".

By example of the undammed Greek/Albanian Vjosa, he demonstrates how geological diversity and dispersal processes promote high beta-biodiversity.

RS with your home river.

The scenic Greenbrier. One of* the longest undammed rivers in the Eastern US, this beauty flows from its headwaters in the Allegheny mountains to the New River at Hinton, WV. Just upstream from the mouth is Talcott, WV, where John Henry fatefully raced the steam drill.

Why America is removing thousands of dams and letting rivers flow freely: Excerpt
Originally published on December 5, 2025. This excerpt is adapted from Tara Lohan’s Undammed: Freeing Rivers and Bringing Communities to Life (2025) and published here with permission from Island Press. It was produced for the web by Earth | Food | Life, a project of the Independent Media Institute. With more than 550,000 dams in the United States, free-flowing rivers are an endangered species. We’ve dammed, diked, and diverted almost every major river in the country, straightening curves, pinching off floodplains, and blocking passage for fish and other aquatic animals. But this has come at a great cost. Freshwater biodiversity—all the organisms that hail from our rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands—is among the most threatened on the planet. Dams have played a big role in that demise, pushing fish, mussels, and other animals to the brink, and some over it. In North America, nearly 40 percent of fish are imperiled, and 61 species have blinked out since 1900. A growing dam removal movement has led to some 2,200 dams being blasted and backhoed from U.S. rivers—most of them in the past 25 years. It’s an extraordinary turn of events for a dam-loving country. Europeans began erecting river barriers soon after...
