July 26, 1925: Joseph Engelberger, the developer of the first industrial robot and an advocate for the expanded use of robotics, is born in Brooklyn. His Unimate robot arm was first used to weld die castings at a GM plant in 1961, and made an appearance on Johnny Carson’s show.

I'm getting old, so I've seen lots of technological advances over my lifetime. I can't think of ONE that was despised as much as AI is now. (Hell, even the idea of Reagan's "Star Wars" was mostly popular)

Were the Unimate robots hated this much in the early 60s? (Before my time.) Maybe a close 2nd?

Right?!
You'd be surprised how many people told me not to "throw my education overboard" in those months. I had to drop a call from a unimate, because she was screaming down the line at me and I was sitting in a full train

When I did return I graduated top of my class tho, so there's that
