#Unisys
Remember how a year before the dotcom bubble every other ad was for Unisys?
seems like every fucking ad read in a youtube video right now is for zocdoc. I predict this company will be out of business by the end of the year.

It’s important we tell our own stories if no one else does. Here is my memory of the Unisys ICON and some ICON games, a computer that only Xennials from Ontario would have used. They were almost all destroyed and no archives or emulators exist. True lost media.

The Unisys Icon: One Canadian Xennial's Memories of Ontario's Obscure Computer
One topic that often comes up in retro gaming circles is how aspects of gaming history not part of the American story don't get enough attention. I personally feel it's mostly up to the people to whom...

Unisys still exists. Don't look at the stock price though.

The Burroughs/Unisys ICON was an educational computer in Ontario, Canada and almost none exist. I do have one of the earlier models but ICONs were client computers that ran off of a LexICON central server. I need to try to resurrect that, if possible.

After many weeks of experimentation and hacking, I've finally managed to get my Ontario educational Unisys Icon computer workstation to think it's a Lexicon server and boot up it's native QNX operating system from hard drive. Now I am in dire need any software that might be out in the wild. Help!

Sperry merged with Burroughs and became Unisys, which against all odds still exists, mostly surviving off government contracts

The buildings around Sperry Tower are still owned by Unisys

Life is great... until Unisys the unicorn becomes UNDEAD! Going from cute to creepy convinces Unisys he belongs in dungeons with monsters. But all he needs is a creative way to piece himself--& his confidence--back together!

coverage of obscure early-tech-era devices (Minitel, unisys etc) warms my geriatric millennial heart

Just wait until they hit Fortran at NOAA.

It is funny to see COBOL come up, my dad’s first job was coding at Unisys over 50 years ago. Probably would run circles around these kids.

The damn dial up connection had me doomed as a teenager trying to have a social life.
My dad was a computer engineer for Unisys, man was always online.

Found after the initial DEFINES in the source of a Unisys COBOL74 compiler, a few years ago:

% LASCIATE OGNE SPERANZA, VOI CH'INTRATE

And that source code (the compiler) was written in high level language (Unisys extended ALGOL).

Nei.

Men jeg behersker Unisys Extended Algol flytende.

I was in BankWest IT when it was outsourced to Unisys in the 2000's. The costs went down by cutting the only thing they could: staffing! They certainly got their pound of flesh from the reduced workforce. Of course the service went down commensurately but Unisys got very good at issuing apologies 😆

The Unisys ICON is a bit of Canadian legend -- an 80186 based diskless workstation that used a file server called the LexICON, and which ran QNX.

Owning one is my retrocomputing white whale -- they were almost all destroyed by the Ministry of Education.
