I enjoy all kinds of Godzilla depictions, from the bleak stuff like 1954 to the goofy shit in the 70s. But I think he’s at his best, thematically or otherwise, when he’s inexorable, not a force of nature but a force of *unnature* — the nuclear genie you simply cannot put back in the bottle

The themes here are still powerful and the POV still uniquely postwar Japanese. I remember reading that despite Big G more or less representing the bomb, many Japanese viewers at the time identified or sympathized with *him*, as even he’s a victim of the US nuclear program

Revisiting the original Gojira/Godzilla (1954). Despite being a huge G-fan I only ever saw the American edit that made it seem like a B-movie. This is not a B-movie. It almost beggars belief that this was made not even a decade out from Hiroshima/Nagasaki.
