Folks I talked to at SCANZ today are worried about the chilling effect the UoAs position on harassment will have on #scicomm. Meanwhile, in court today, when asked whether gendered harassment can affect women’s participation in public life, the UoA VC: “I don’t necessarily agree with that view”.

This is a pattern that pervades the post REF2021 era. See also for example Kent, or at UoA level History, where the top 4 performing UoAs have all faced significant redundancies after their high results.

This seems to imply that research is undertaken in UoAs ('submitting units'), whereas research instead takes place in research centres, institutes, departments, schools etc., which often don't map directly onto UoAs. Really struggling to understand what 'representative' means in this context. 2/2

All 4 of the 4 top-ranked History UoAs in REF2021 have experienced or been threatened with redundancies since the results were announced.

60/40 SPRE split queried. Apparently intended to enhance visibility of HEI strategies without quashing UoAs' distinctive contribution. Don't envy panels scoring institutional statements (reading them is like eating sand). But they were surprisingly useful in 2021 for assessment of smaller UoAs.

You can study master's in UoAS, but it requires work experience first. Technically you can also study master's in different school (get bachelor's in UoAS and master's in university for example), but that can be bit tricky.

also having to use pre-agreed datasets would mean UoAs couldn't hide things like "all of our staff report being bullied"; or "all our ECRs leave after their contracts, because we treat them like shit" which were totally glossed over previously

The RAE's 5* system was useful in that context. But the bigger question is whether, given HEIs' current funding & research & time constraints, having submitting UoAs & sub-panels labour to distinguish between 3* and 4* assessments is actually good value for public money.

The overall (full pilot) results for the 8 selected UoAs are on pages 36ff. 'There is a clear trend with larger institutions scoring higher on average than smaller institutions.' (p. 44)

You can apply to both with both highschool and vocational school backgrounds. UoAS is more focused on practical studies while universities can be more book & research heavy.

I’m so sorry. In 2017-2018 the only two units at Southampton that had come top in their respective UoAs in 2014 REF - Music and Nursing and Midwifery - were among 23 other redundancy consultations. Guess in which depts I (the union branch pres) and my VP were in?

Newcastle is one of the universities participating in the REF2029 People, Culture & Environment pilot. At least that will build into the process the wee problem of how UoAs and institutions can be expected to compose a meaningful PCE submission in this context. But seriously....

Quite a few colleagues are not research active or are practice based. I think they are worried about 1* or even no star at all colleagues. They are certainly worried about impact case studies and very small UoAs.
