this is the trump guy urtext

As always, the urtext of Trump:

“The former official said he doesn't think Trump is playing ‘the sort of three-dimensional chess people ascribe to decisions like this. More often than not he's just eating the pieces.’"
Conspiracy theorizing doesn't help, especially when based on the premise that Trump and Co. are thinking multiple moves ahead, carefully executing secret plots.

Vigilance and worry, yes, but don't grant the regime more power and competence than it has. That's how you get people to obey in advance.

Urtext vs Textur
March 25, 2026 at 12:47 PM
You can see the German legacy in academic and technical Englishes worldwide, scientific and otherwise: angst, bismuth, bremsstrahlung, eigenvector, feldspar, gestalt, gneiss, hinterland, leitmotif, loanword, LSD, Q source, quartz, rinderpest, sprachbund, urheimat, urtext, wanderwort, worldview
It's hard to describe how important Germany was for science before the nazis.

Like French before, German was the lingua franca of science. You basically had to know German, for the previous century, in order to read and understand the latest stuff going on.

Random thought, is Prof. Harold Hill of The Music Man inspired by Napoleon Hill? Napoleon Hill is the writer of Think and Grow Rich, the urtext of all dumb self-help airport books.

I am saying this completely seriously: Master and Commander will be the urtext of a far future civilisation, Canticle for Leibowitz style. Not the Patrick O'Brien novels, but this movie specifically.

an interesting thing about reading jane austen is that her books are essentially the urtext of modern historical romance and yet it’s hard to think of a romance novel in the last 25 years that would allow the kind of consequences for its characters that happen in austen novels

The irony is that public skepticism of higher ed is a direct result of 75 years of conservative attacks on it. Yale was literally the target of the urtext, “god and man at Yale.”
OH COME ON. Brooks knows fuck-all about "society at large".
