A scene from the 1946 Japanese historical drama film Utamaro and His Five Women (Japanese: Utamaro o meguru gonin no onna), directed by Kenji Mizoguchi.
A medium close-up, black-and-white film still depicting the ukiyo-e master Kitagawa Utamaro painting directly onto the bare back of a woman. On the left, a courtesan or geisha is seated with her back turned toward the camera, her patterned kimono slipped down to her waist to reveal her bare back. Her head is turned in profile looking over her left shoulder, adorned with an elaborate traditional Edo-period hairstyle (nihongami) held in place with numerous hairpins (kanzashi). On her back, a delicate, large-scale ink painting of a beauty (bijinga) with flowing dark hair and a small child is rendered in classical brushstrokes. On the right, Utamaro—portrayed with a shaved pate and traditional topknot (chonmage), dressed in a patterned dark kimono—leans in closely with a focused, intense expression. He carefully holds a fine fine-tipped calligraphy brush in his right hand, poised to apply ink directly onto the woman's skin. In the background, soft diffused light filters through a traditional translucent paper sliding screen (shōji), emphasizing the stark tonal contrast and artistic concentration of the moment.

“Women picking mulberry leaves, from the series Silkworm Culture: The Handiwork of Women, by Kitagawa Utamaro. Published by Tsuruya Kiemon, c. 1798-1800. “ Text and images via Gina Collia-Suzuki.
An alt text description for the woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro: A vertical Japanese woodblock print (ukiyo-e) titled "Women Picking Mulberry Leaves," sheet two from Kitagawa Utamaro’s celebrated series Silkworm Culture: The Handiwork of Women (Joshi Teshigoto-gusa: Joshoku Kaiko Teshigoto-gusa), published by Tsuruya Kiemon circa 1798–1800. The composition depicts three women engaged in gathering fresh mulberry leaves to feed silkworms. On the right, a woman stands barefoot atop a sturdy two-tiered wooden bench, reaching into the leafy branches of a tall mulberry tree. She wears a white headscarf (tenugui), a striped brownish-purple outer garment tucked up to reveal a blue lower robe adorned with white interlocking circle (shippō) patterns, and a gold-hued obi patterned with floral crests. In the center, a second woman perched higher up on a bamboo ladder reaches into the upper branches, holding a branch as she picks leaves; her head is wrapped in a blue patterned kerchief, and her striped kimono is tucked up to display a blue-and-white floral lining. On the left, a third woman stands on the ground in profile, looking upward toward her companions while carrying a large, deep woven wicker basket filled to the brim with green mulberry leaves suspended from a shoulder strap. She wears her hair styled in a traditional bun with hairpins, dressed in a blue checked kimono accented with a wide geometric honeycomb (kikkō) obi sash. Another filled basket rests on the ground behind her near the base of a building frame. In the upper corners, yellow cloud-shaped cartouches contain Japanese calligraphic inscriptions detailing the series title and sericulture instructions, while Utamaro's signature (Utamaro hitsu) and the publisher's seal appear in the lower left corner. The image features a refined palette of soft blues, muted purples, golden ochres, and deep leafy greens set against an off-white background.

Fancy-free Type https://collections.artsmia.org/art/1998/
After producing a few successful books, Utamaro and the publisher Tsutaya launched an innovative type of bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) series. It was the first to feature women in half-length portraits, a format previously reserved for yakusha-e (actor prints). It was also the first attempt by an ukiyo-e artist to represent the individuality of women. Except for the most famous prostitutes, print designers tended to depict women as stereotypes of femininity. Utamaro’s close-up portraits straightforwardly captured the facial expressions of his models, vividly evoking their personalities despite their anonymity. The woman shown here is identified on the print as the “fickle type.” To convey that quality, Utamaro has her casting a glance over her shoulder, hoping to catch the eye of an interested suitor as she returns, careless and disheveled, from the bath.

{群童遊戯図屏風 · 曽我蕭白筆 · 江戸時代 18世紀 / Edo period 18th century · Japan Search · 国立国会図書館} — A screen painting by the enigmatic artist Kitagawa Utamaro (approximately 1730-1781) was recently discovered in this gallery, which had been hidden away for some time. This work, a copy by a later artist, features a landscape setting with willow trees, cows, and rivers on either side. The scene outside the door depicts children at play and two women. The unique characteristic of this painting is the depiction of peculiar figures with silver hair on their backs. The clothing of the figures is rendered with vibrant colors, water ink, and gold powder, conveying the diverse expression of Utamaro's art.

Utamaro drew Kintarō, the strongest boy in Japanese folklore, pulling a face at himself in a hand mirror while his mother does her hair, and nobody who does that has ever won a 子供扱い argument.
