I ended up disabling USB 3's mass storage device protocol (forgot what it's called) on my Linux box because I just couldn't trust it when doing huge backups.
On the flipside, we were getting 70Mbps on a very noisy VDSL2 FTTC line that the engineer discovered had only 1 wire left connected!

Quand j'habitais Strasbourg, au début des années 2000, on avait le câble. 256 k et dans mes souvenirs c'était synchrone aussi. Aujourd'hui, je suis en VDSL2 a 80 Mo. C'est fou ce qu'on peut passer comme data sur 4 pauvres câbles en cuivre 😱

Ici, la fibre est aérienne (comme le reste) et vu la vétusté de l'installation (on n'est que des bouseux ici…), c'est les câbles qui tiennent les poteaux. La moitié des installations fibres du bled fonctionnent en dégradé et moi, je rêve de reste en VDSL2 ad vitam aeternam…

yeah exactly, this is a VDSL2 service so it's delivered over POTS. best i can get thanks to that POTS connection which is from my apartment to the complex MDF. outside the jurisdiction of NBNco so they won't replace it and lmao if my landlord would pay to replace it with Cat6.

ngl, gig/multi-gig DSL would be a BOON for my current situation. i live in an apartment complex so my connection is hamstrung by the copper POTS cable from my apartment to the MDF. TPG have a fibre drop in the cabinet and a DSLAM so best i can do is 100/40 VDSL2.

even though i'm running my instance from my NAS at home on a VDSL2 connection with max 40Mb/s upstream the amount of media i've served is respectable.

Home network update: decided to drop the hammer on a brand-new Fortinet FortiGate 90G NGFW to replace my existing FortiGate 60F. More than 3x the performance, kind of overkill but also future-proofing me in case I ever manage to get internet better than VDSL2. www.fortinet.com/content/dam/...

Ya'll heard of QUIC yeah? The multiplexed transport protocol built on UDP which is used by HTTP/3 to make it fast/efficient/secure? It's pretty great...as long as your MTU is 1500. Unfortunately my home internet is delivered via PPPoE on VDSL2 so my MTU is 1492 and HTTP/3 refuses to work!

Y'a un caillou coincé à l'entrée du PER par-dessus le câble cuivre. Au premier essai, le technicien SPIE ne pouvait pas l'enlever, alors on m'envoie un deuxième technicien (sûrement un spécialiste du cassage de cailloux 🙄)

Not a problem whatsoever, will work fine.
You can also just skip the balun altogether, the impedance mismatch and the unbalanced/balanced difference is not irrelevant, but VDSL2 needs to work over much, much, _much_ worse lines :)

Mitä tossa jossain kohtaa laskin niin 20M olis minimi millä pärjään, käytännössä siis ADSL2+ tekniikka olisi riittävä vielä. 100M olis ideaali niin ei tarvis miettiä nopeuksia tai mitään vaan headroomia löytys eli VDSL2 tekniikka. Työhommien myötä mulla on 1000M kaapelimodeemi 🙃
