At Xerox PARC in the 1970s, she co-developed the Mead-Conway Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) chip design method with Carver Mead. This revolution simplified microchip design, allowing engineers to pack millions of transistors onto a single chip using software rather than hand-drawing. /4

This is before the word "VLSI" was even coined.
How a Small Class at Caltech Helped Launch a Computer Revolution
A computer chip design course taught by Carver Mead in the 1970s proved foundational to the rise of VLSI.

…but the VLSI design methodology that made it possible to implement Wilson et al’s design for the ARM - that was Conway’s work.

Intel wins jury trial over patent licenses in $3 billion VLSI fight
A Texas federal jury determined on Thursday that Intel may have a license to patents owned by VLSI Technology, boosting Intel's efforts to overturn patent infringement verdicts that awarded VLSI more than $3 billion in damages.

In the early 1980s, if a college or university even had a VLSI design course (very few did back then), it almost certainly used Mead and Conway as the text.

Maybe I should do another ASIC/VLSI stream,

I really enjoyed the one I did with Lina where I taught her some basic VLSI stuff, could be fun to drag a poor unfortunate soul in for another /j :v

2/ I still have my copy of Lynn Conway’s & Carver Mead’s seminal book on VLSI chip design & I often talked to Sophie Wilson at Hot Chips conferences.
We named both Fellows of the Computer History Museum.

*nods* Conway is partly responsible for the success of VLSI chip design automation so her influence extends, surprisingly, much farther (despite hundreds of billions of ARM cores shipped)

Following her transition, Conway adopted a new name and identity and restarted her career. She worked at Xerox PARC from 1973 to 1983, where she led the "LSI Systems" group. She initiated the Mead–Conway VLSI chip design revolution in very large-scale integrated (VLSI) microchip design

Lynn Conway, electricial engineer and computer scientist, co-architect of the VLSI design revolution, and transgender activist, was born #OTD in 1938.

She invented Dynamic Instruction Scheduling at IBM, but IBM fired her when they learned she was transitioning. 🧪 👩‍🔬

More than just smartphone chips, her contributions to VLSI technology gave birth to the microprocessor, allowing computers to fit on a desk rather than a whole room.

Vintage computer engineering, signal processing, cryptography, algorithms, VLSI, and communications theory textbooks from the 1900s. Much the information is timeless, some is very obsolete.

Lynn Conway, transitioning in 1968, Electrical Engineer, co-creator of VLSI design methodology (and I think out-of-order instruction execution at IBM pre-transition).
