The fastest known star in the Milky Way orbits our galaxy's central black hole at 25,000 km/s, 8% of the speed of light. Astronomers just found it. And it is the key to a measurement nobody has ever made.

Milky Way's fastest star orbits a black hole so close, it feels its spin
Astronomers have discovered the fastest known star in our galaxy, the Milky Way, orbiting the black hole at its centre. The star, named S301, was detected with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (ESO’s VLTI) and reaches speeds of 25 000 km/s as it travels aro

S301 was detected using the VLTI interferometer and the GRAVITY instrument at ESO’s Paranal Observatory.

It is extremely faint — two billion times fainter than Betelgeuse.

The observations cover the years from 2017 to 2025.

ICYMI Our VLTI has found a star that’s breaking records!

➡️ It’s the fastest star known in our galaxy
➡️ It comes closer to the #MilkyWay ’s supermassive #BlackHole than any other star found before.

This makes it the first star that could allow us to measure the black hole’s spin.
