A big part of music theory is that it standardizes a lot ideas into terms that are applicable across all music to make communicating those ideas easier

Then out of nowhere I realized that bVII is the top 3 notes of Vm7. Playing it as Vm7 sounded better, but then came the second part of the "aha": I could play V7 instead, making it a proper perfect cadence by borrowing from Melodic Minor. Sure enough, it sounds great.
