In the 1990s, Vietnam had a deal with France to buy Mirage 2000s but the deal eventually fell through due to pressure from the US and the embargo. So I draw a Mirage 2000 lady in VPAF based on the Su-30 livery.

It’s naval, but the US escaped fatalities on the USS Higbee to VPAF MiG-17 in 1972 by luck, could have been a dozen.

No one’s going to argue that it’s not a critique of imperialism writ large, but there’s not much that feels specific to Vietnam. Star Wars ends with a major offensive victory by the rebel Air Force equivalent, but I don’t think the VPAF was ever a decisive threat in that way.

Part two of same model. The real aircraft had two kill marks, one VPAF An-2 shot down early in the Vietnam War in 1966 (yellow star), while the black MiG-17 silhouette was corresponds to a confirmed kill in March 1972 by a different crew.

Off-topic but this book really has made me pissed off at the reductive framing of Vietnam as "the most advanced army in the world got beat by a bunch of barefoot peasants." The VPAF air defense network was incredibly sophisticated and almost entirely Vietnamese, with a key Russian advisors and techs

IIRC Mig-17s did most of the VPAF air to air victories and were a motivator to seriously practice dogfights and the US setting up Red Flag and Top Gun.

Essentially it was a reply to a claim by a VPAF pilot that he shot down a B-52 during LINEBACKER II. Fifteen BUFFs were shot down, all to SAMs. I detailed all the losses. MiGs did fly close to the Strats as an assist to the ground crews operating the SAM sites.

explaining to American plane nerds who had grown up being told repeatedly that they were beaten by rice farmers that the VPAF had a very real, very extant, and very skilled air force gave the US real, genuine trouble and watching their expressions of surprise is always,, a frustrating enlightening
