#VSYS
Got online by running an RNDIS host on a Pico LiPo 2XL with VBUS bridged to VSYS. Turns out a LiPo voltage is juuuust enough to trick an i.MX28 into firing up USB. Some register tweaks bring the detect voltage down to ~3v too, and further tweaks stop it from charging from the host 🙃

Kicking off a new series over at CD-ROM journal: covering Daiso’s ¥100 ultrabudget game series. Just how much game can you even get for ¥100? You’d be surprised! Some really interesting stuff in here - for less than a dollar a game, they couldn’t afford to be picky. cdrom.ca/games/the-ga...

Order 5206 Complete!

Nintendo Gamecube came in for a Picoboot install!

Nice, quick and easy! Wired up from 5V VSYS as per recommended install and PicoBoot is running latest version, tested with an SD card running latest SWISS

My thought is if I can just bypass the micro usb port entirely, I can use the USB-C battery charging breakout as a pass-thru of sorts, with the bonus of working around the GFX Pack VSYS issue
April 20, 2025 at 9:11 PM
Great question! I usually would use VSYS too but I'm using an older rev GFX Pack that has a quirk:
April 20, 2025 at 9:10 PM
Unfortunately I don't see an answer to my specific question, which is mainly: is it safe to connect the 5V out from the battery charger/USB-C breakout directly to the VBUS (not VSYS) pin if I don't plan on using the Pico's micro-USB port at all
April 20, 2025 at 8:56 PM
2) a workaround for the VSYS issue (basically can't power the LEDs on the GFX Pack from VSYS), and less importantly 3) USB-C port for programming/power/charging.
April 20, 2025 at 8:40 PM
Usually VSYS is for battery (and I think you also want a Schottky to prevent backfeeding the USB port) but in my case I can't use VSYS. So I'd like to bypass the micro usb on the Pico completely and use that breakout instead. In theory, this gives me 1) easy battery charging, (continued...)
April 20, 2025 at 8:39 PM
Two challenges to my gfx pack etch-a-sketch plan that might make me reconsider: 1) backlight doesn't work on VSYS power on this rev of the gfx pack, and 2) battery powering/charging with the pico is kind of a pain normally, but because of #1 I'd have to get especially creative with it

And indeed, we had displays in mind (the pin order matches our SPI breakout garden products). The addition of VSYS is to support our Clipper breakout, which uses the UART of those pins rather than SPI.

March 21, 2025 at 4:40 PM
