Sad news that Steve Robey has passed away. Best known as the last person to speak to Frederick Valentich, he also had a wealth of deep aviation knowledge and experience, and was unstintingly generous with his time and expertise. A really lovely, genial bloke. Thinking of his family and many friends.

One of Szeps’ lesser-known works was a one-man play called “Sky” (1992) written by John Misto, loosely based on the Valentich disappearance. (Valentich’s fiance Rhonda told me she saw it and thought it was amazing.) He played a fictionalised version of Valentich’s father Guido.

It's a pity that the Valentich disappearance is as evocative as it is because I'm pretty sure that evocativeness is because Valentich stage-managed it. I'd call that one a pretty clear-cut case of pilot suicide
