We are excited to share a cohort of 18 patients with severe #ValleyFever (coccidioidomycosis) treated with dupilumab and/or interferon gamma, extending our first report in NEJM 2020 (PMID: 32521134). Host-directed immunomodulation works to treat fungal infections as an adjunct to antifungals!

Great article by Katharine Walter on expanding range of #ValleyFever. Fungal diseases have unique #epidemiology driven by climate change, natural and human disturbance, and biological and ecological processes that we don't understand well!

Used to be people would come to the southwest to cure respiratory issues, tuberculosis, etc. This has been appearing in dogs and cats as well, have your vet test for it if your pet has issues of unknown origin.
This growing fungal disease outbreak spreads through dust and dirt
Once limited to the Southwest, valley fever now threatens vast swaths of the U.S. It's often misdiagnosed, and it can lead to terrible disease.

Dry, dusty days = greater risk of Valley fever. People and pets in CA can get Valley fever by breathing in a fungus found in outdoor dirt & dust in the Central Valley and Central Coast. Lingering cough, fever, fatigue? Talk to a doctor: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/valleyfever

The Valley fever fungus grows in the dirt in certain areas of CA. When it gets in the air, people and pets can breathe it in & get sick. If you work outside in dusty areas and have symptoms that aren’t getting better, ask a doctor about Valley fever.
