In case you didn't know, Sandra Gimpel—a stunt woman as well as an actress—was cast as Nancy Crater partly bc the costume was so heavy, but she could handle it.
(Her being buff also lends credibility to the scene where, disguised as Nancy in McCoy's quarters, she belts Spock across the room.)

Episode 2: The Man Trap. The first of many Trek titles that could double as titles for gay porn. Dr McCoy rekindles an old flame with a salt vampire as Spock beats the hell out of it. Bones winds up shooting it as it attacks Kirk, because bros before salt succubuses.

First up: "The Man Trap", in which a lonely professor on a remote planet has fallen for a salt vampire that can look like anyone, even a generic black crewman drawn from Uhura's memories. McCoy is too horny to do his job, Kirk is stressin' for losing non-redshirted crewmen, and Spock shouts.

Fun fact- One of my earliest memories (that I can accurately date) was watching Star Trek, sitting on my dad's knee and asking why Spock had green blood.
It was the 26th June 1984, I was 4 years old and the episode was The Man Trap.
And some people have the audacity to call me a geek. Ha!

I adjusted to Ethan Peck as Spock so presumably with more time I will adjust to Paul Wesley as Kirk, given that I already like Paul Wesley (he was the best part of The Vampire Diaries, I insist) but it's just so strange initially
happy Star Trek, today after all my work and errands are done I'm going to make myself a playlist of "only the SNW episodes that have James T Kirk show up" so I can have my spirk crumbs

people say strange new worlds is hewing close to TOS, and aesthetically and in-universe continuity it is, but the actual show that it most reminds me of structurally, is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Its very Buffy to use standalone genre exercise episodes for character development

credit where it's due, I think this set DOES have cards in it that tell a good story even if you've never seen the show, it just leans into the references too often, too hard. If it wanted to feel more like a magic set, it would have more cards like this:

Yes, I do remember when Spock Kamehameha'd the Salt Vampire. He went on to beat Jackie Chun afterwards.

I am proud of the quirky little magazine section that we are putting together at MZS.press arts bookstore. Nearly all the selections are entertainment-related magazines, some recent, some dating back 50 or 60 years, plus special issues on a single topic.

There are a few things I don't entirely jive with here (Generations and Insurrection and Search for Spock are *not* terrible IMO 😂), but framing NEMESIS as a 'Star Trek: Dracula' is actually incredibly interesting and might make it a better movie...?

Bluesky has some advantages over the other place (fewer Nazis etc) but so many on here are so literal and Spock-like about humour and seem wilfully unable to see when someone is making a joke or just being flippant. I’m starting to wonder if it’s another Russian psy-op to demoralise the opposition…
