Forest Grove resident Jackson King was hanging out in the office of Vicki VanLoo, the college and career specialist at the Forest Grove High School, when she mentioned something about getting a commercial driver's license. "I didn't really know much about it, and then I go home and told my dad," King said. "I was like, hey, there's an opportunity to get a free CDL. And he's like, you should get on that. So I filled out the application and then, sure enough, I got accepted." King, 19, is one of nine students who earned a Class A commercial driver's license in the first class of Northwest Regional Education Service District's youth CDL program. Brayden Hamel, a 2026 Banks High School graduate, is another, according to NWRESD. King, a Forest Grove resident, graduated from Forest Grove High School this year. He works at NAPA and is going to college for an associate degree in construction management. "The reason I did it was I just thought it'd be cool to have, it'd be nice to have as, like, a, always something to fall back on," King said. "So if, like, one job doesn't work out, I always have driving to fall back on, too, and it pays decent." According to NWRESD, the 160-hour program guided the first class through the process of earning a permit, getting medically cleared to drive a truck, completing a four-week training course and, finally, earning the license. Washington County students train at Elite Truck School in Hillsboro, according to an NWRESD flyer. Jaimie Brady, a teacher on special assignment at NWRESD who co-led the project, said 17 students applied for the first class. Sixteen were selected for permit training, 14 earned a permit, 12 were invited into the Class A training and nine earned the Class A license. "The hardest part for me was the pre-trip, like the memorization of the whole sheet that you have to memorize," King said. "That was pretty challenging. It took me a little bit longer than normal to pass that part. But on the test, it was easier than I thought it would be." "Yeah, it's fun," King said of driving a big rig. "It's easier than you think it would be. You just got to be a little more vigilant and stop a little sooner." "No, I have not yet, just because of school," King said when asked whether he's used the license. "And I can't really do a lot of the CDL jobs with my school, the degree that I'm trying to get." Asked what he would tell another Forest Grove senior thinking about applying, King said, "Do it." "The best thing that can come out of it is you get a card that can get you a job anywhere," he said. According to NWRESD's Oct. 7 story on the first class, the program grew out of a search by Washington County superintendents for new ways to prepare students for life after high school. NWRESD staff used Oregon Employment Department data to plot industries in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties by demand and pay. Transportation and logistics showed an estimated 16,000 jobs and 1,900 new ones added every year, and truck and bus drivers in that three-county area earn a median wage of $65,000 a year. Because most long-haul trucking companies don't hire drivers younger than 21, the program points students toward local employers, according to NWRESD. Banks Superintendent Brian Sica and the other six Washington County superintendents signed on before the program's leaders held an open house for local trucking and construction companies in May 2025, according to NWRESD. "What immediately stood out to me was both the growing need for people to enter the logistics and transportation fields and the lack of local training opportunities, particularly for high school students," Sica said in NWRESD's story. Brady said the direct cost of the training and licensing fees was $6,365, and that it will go up next year because of fuel prices and licensing fees. NWRESD and corporate partners, including TriMet, NW Natural Gas, Schaeffer's Oil and Oak Harbor Freight, pay the tuition, she said. Students pay for their permit up front and are reimbursed if they're accepted, according to an NWRESD flyer. The Class A training is free to students. This year the program is growing. Each of the 20 school districts in NWRESD's four-county region gets one spot for a senior, Brady said. Elite Truck School will train students from Washington, Columbia and Clatsop counties, and Tillamook Bay Community College will train Tillamook County students. NWRESD will pick one student per district, and Brady said NWRESD is confident Banks and Forest Grove will each have at least one applicant. Applicants must be 18 and graduating seniors, with a year of driving experience in good standing. New this year, they must pass the permit test before they apply.
