Vanik Voskanyan, a 40-year-old man from Yerevan, Armenia, was fatally stabbed in an alley behind the 400 block of North Palm Drive in Beverly Hills on the night of August 30, 2026. According to Beverly Hills police and the L.A. County medical examiner, Voskanyan died from multiple sharp-force injuries in a hospital shortly after the attack. The suspected assailant, 19-year-old Conoray Lawantara, a Beverly Hills resident, was charged with murder and pleaded not guilty. Lawantara claimed he acted in self-defense, stating he used a 3.9-inch knife after Voskanyan allegedly reached for his neck during a verbal altercation. However, Judge Keith Schwartz criticized the defense, noting that Lawantara 'stabbed him repeatedly, like in a horror movie,' and questioned why he confronted Voskanyan in the first place. Voskanyan's family and friends disputed media reports that portrayed him as homeless, emphasizing that he lived with his mother and brother in Glendale, was well-educated, and had a passion for reading, politics, and current events. Over 100 people attended his funeral at St. Leon Armenian Cathedral in Burbank, followed by a graveside service at Grand View Memorial Park in Glendale. Voskanyan, who had studied dentistry in Armenia and worked various jobs in the U.S., including construction and dental technology, was described by friends as kind, intelligent, and deeply loved. His family expressed shock at the violence and called for justice, stating that the media's portrayal of him as homeless was inaccurate and disrespectful. Lawantara was released on $2 million bail and is scheduled to return to court on November 5 for a preliminary hearing. The case has drawn attention to the media's tendency to oversimplify victims' lives and the importance of accurate representation in news reporting.

Ambassador Herbst told the committee that repealing the Jackson–Vanik amendment and encouraging U.S. investment and visits could produce "real" changes quickly and lift the U.S. share of rare and critical minerals trade in Central Asia from about 2% to 10–20% over a decade.
