Saw this article and told the roommate and the dog “new monitor lizard just dropped” and then @cascoclauda.bsky.social messaged me minutes later “new monitor lizard just dropped” because we have the same brain.

It is dirty and sloughing - Given its robustness I would say Varanus panoptes (but I could be wrong).

Monitor can also mean a lizard in the varanus genus.

From now on I shall think of him as:

Mike Johnson the Porn Lizard

I love this for him.

Malayan Water Monitor (Varanus salvator) raiding a Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) nest. There were 3 of them doing this today. The nest is ~ 9 meters up. They are excellent climbers & I have seen them raid a number of different bird nests (even barbets) over the years. #Perak #Malaysia

It can count to six, recognise faces, reproduce without a male, kill prey much larger than itself - and has a nasty, venomous bite
The monitor lizard is not a single species but an entire genus – Varanus – encompassing more than 80 species that together represent one of nature’s most successful reptilian lineages. "An attack can be fatal, due to their venom and bacteria..." The 3 deadliest, most lethal lizards the planet From a diminutive Australian species barely 25cm long to the mighty Komodo dragon stretching past 3m, it spans a size range unmatched by any other lizard family. Ancient, adaptable and surprisingly intelligent, it has occupied Africa, Asia and Australia for tens of millions of years. How many species of monitor lizards are there? More than 80 species are currently recognised within the genus Varanus, and new ones continue to be described – in 2026 three new species of rock-dwelling monitor lizards were discovered in northern Queensland. They range enormously in size, lifestyle and habitat. Is Harry the lizard real in Death in Paradise? And just what type of lizard is the beloved TV fan favourite? Australia is home to roughly half all species, where they are commonly known as goannas; others are spread across sub-Saharan Africa, South and South-East Asia, and the islands of the south-west Pacific. One species, the Nile...

Komodo National Park in Indonesia, is composed of 29 islands – three larger ones (Komodo, Padar, and Rinca) and 26 smaller ones. The park was established in 1980 to protect the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis).

The Komodo dragon, Varanus komodoensis, is not just a giant lizard; it has a unique ability to detect prey from up to 2.5 miles away thanks to its extraordinary sense of smell.
