A Eurasian Scops Owl was found being pecked at by crows in a park in Skopje, North Macedonia. Thankfully it was rescued and later released thanks to the efforts of Irina Tosheva and Velian Jagev

This is the last one i have done. I finished it today. Only reason it came to be was because i wanted to draw my sona, and asked a server which one i should draw. They said cat :]. His color palette is called Velian for reasons that are too long for the character limit.

Totally normal imperial behavior!
Wikipedia entry: Colossus of Nero Historical bronze statue in Rome The Colossus of Nero (Colossus i Neronis) was a 30-metre (98 ft) bronze statue that the Emperor Nero (37-68 AD) created in the vestibule of his Domus Aurea, the imperial villa complex which spanned a large area from the north side of the Palatine Hill, across the Velian ridge to the Esquiline Hill in Rome. It was modified by Nero's successors into a statue of the sun god Sol. The statue was eventually moved to a spot outside the Flavian Amphitheatre, which (according to one of the more popular theories) became known, by its proximity to the Colossus, as the Colosseum.

In AD 121, for the 874th anniversary of Rome’s founding, Hadrian established a new series of games in the Circus Maximus, renamed the Parilia to Romaia, consecrated the Temple of Venus and Roma on the Velian Hill, and renewed the existing line of the pomerium.

Dr Gabbai is hosting Dr. Alexandra Velian from the University of Washington, to present her seminar “Molecular Catalysts Go Nano: Installing Active Sites on Clusters and Nanosheets” on Wednesday, April 29 in CHEM 2104 at 11:30 AM.
Seminar Flyer with ATM logo and headshot of Dr. Velian. Abstract text: A central research goal in the Velian group is to create next-generation single-atom catalysts that harness cooperativity between the active site and chemically non-innocent supports. To emulate defect sites in inorganic heterogeneous catalysts in a controlled fashion, we embed well-defined active sites on clusters and two-dimensional nanosheets. The first part of this seminar will introduce a class of atomically precise nanoclusters featuring discrete active sites that dynamically engage with the metal chalcogenide support and with substrates. The second part will present an orthogonal approach to catalyst design, where principles of organometallic phosphine chemistry are used to anchor single-site active centers on two-dimensional black phosphorus nanosheets. Molecular synthetic and characterization strategies are used to probe bonding and functionality. Biography: Alexandra Velian began her independent career at the University of Washington in 2017. Her group studies single-site catalysts anchored on atomically precise metal chalcogenide clusters and on black phosphorus, with an emphasis on active site/support cooperativity. Her work has been recognized with awards including a Sloan Fellowship (2024), a Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Award (2023), the Marion Milligan Mason Award (2023), a Cottrell Scholar Fellowship (2020), and the Inorganic Chemistry Lectureship Award (2023). She earned her B.S. at Caltech with Theodor Agapie and her Ph.D. at MIT with Christopher Cummins, where she studied reactive phosphorus species. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University with Colin Nuckolls.

#MosaicMonday takes us deep under the #Velia in #Rome, into the #ColosseoForiImperiali subway station, to find a #mosaic pavement from the late #Republic with black tesseræ, once on the floor of the changeroom of a balneum or private bathhouse destroyed in the fire of 64 CE. #AncientBluesky 🏺
MOSAIC PAVEMENT, C1 BCE. SUBWAY STATION COLOSSEO-FORI IMPERIALI A private house on the lower slopes of the now-vanished Velian hill (a saddle between the Esquiline and the Palatine) from the C1 BCE had a private bath or balneum adjoining it, of which two rooms, a pool and a laconicum or sauna, were removed, restored, and reconstructed in the Colosseo-Fori Imperiali subway station. These rooms were served by two apodyteria or changerooms which have not survived, though parts of their floors have. This simple black mosaic floor is edged with two white line frames, and is decorated with small hexagons in giallo antico, in carefully-spaced rows. The balneum was destroyed in Nero's great fire of 64 CE, and any intact stone was removed for probable reuse in the Domus Aurea.

Look on the bright side. Nero’s golden palace and giant statue helped accelerate his downfall and death.
