Everyone saw that Kotek’s political stunt didn’t stop the Verrus data center in Salem, right?
August 3, 2026 at 2:23 AM
Today on Volts: Verrus wants to build data centers that use very little water, run quietly, and rely on giant batteries rather than diesel or natgas generators, which can make them grid assets that help reduce power prices. It hasn't overcome local opposition. I talk with the CEO.

On Friday, I'm talking with the CEO of Verrus, a company that makes flexible data centers.

Got questions?

YOU can keep data-centers out of your city!

"It seems the message was received. Per the Salem Reporter, Verrus’ representatives left the hearing early because they “did not feel safe.”

Fascinating @volts.wtf interview w Verrus, a data center firm trying to fo it right.

As somebody who's pro data center revolt but very open to data centers done right:

Verrus is as unsophisticated about people -- especially about what it takes to rebuild trust -- as they are smart about tech

Today on Volts: everyone is bracing for the impact of big, inflexible data centers on the grid. But what if they could be good grid citizens? I talk with a startup, Verrus, that is building a flexible data center, ie, a data center that can ramp up & down, go on & off grid power, as the grid needs.

Update: Verrus says it still intends to build its Salem data center.
After howls of outrage from Salem residents, Kotek canceled the sale of 32 acres of stand land for a planned $5 billion data center.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the governor's action will kill the project. Her office didn't specify what authority Kotek has to block the land sale.

The company is Verrus, aka Google, and unfortunately they have skirted the moratorium thanks to our city working with them under cover of darkness (an NDA) for 16 months. We have a corrupt mayor. Beware, coming to a town near you. Get proactive and make sure your city bans them before they arrive.

FYI, I recorded a pod with Verrus -- coming out in a week or two.

The dungeon gang are all low class, except for one guy, and all tomb cleaners
Verrus: member of a blacksmith's shop
Lyza: lay cleric, not real clergy but aids in minor liturgy
Nettie: cogsmith's apprentice/student
Sucuk: wealthy guildsman's fourth son, academic, secret invoker
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, tell me about your MC's (or another important character if you don't do MCs) role in society. Are they upper or lower class? What job/tasks do they do as part of this society? Are they even a member of a society?

They are using a company named Verrus to greenwash their plans.

UPDATE:

Gov Kotek halted the use of public land. The company Verrus still wants to build in Salem but a building moratorium hearing will happen next week and Salem wants to follow Hillsboro with a ban on all new data centers. If you live in Oregon call your rep!

This kind of detail isn't something I tend to do as a worldbuilder. I can say, however, one of the dungeon gang, Verrus, was a mercenary and soldier for 30 years. He knew and was his fair share of commanders. Each and every one were petty tyrants wrangling squads of bastards.
Hello, #JanuaryWorldbuilders! We're doing military/warfare week in our fictional worlds. Do any of your armies have a notable general or commander? Who are they and what are they like? Are they well-respected or feared by their soldiers? How strategic are they?

The dungeon crawler gang don't have anything fancy. Verrus has a 1h hefty arming sword with a diamond-shaped tip. Lyza has a battered old mace with thick flanges. Sutch is an invoker but hides it, he's used for his knowledge. Nettie doesn't carry a weapon, she works locks.
Alright, time to get into some of those weeds I promised! The theme of this week and next will be fighting-centric. Weapons and armor this week. Militaries next week. Today's #JanuaryWorldbuilders Q: What weapon(s) are used by your MC (or another important character?)
