CDC is no longer surveilling outbreaks caused by campylobacter, cyclospora, listeria, shigella, vibrio and Yersinia. What could go wrong?
The CDC quietly scaled back a surveillance program for foodborne illnesses.
As of July 1, a critical surveillance program is monitoring for only two pathogens instead of the usual eight.

Louisiana health officials said that five residents died this year after they were sickened with Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria that thrives in warm seas and brackish water. Another four people in the state were hospitalized with the infection, health officials said.

Vibrio is the number 1 cause of food poisoning related mortality.

You think you're going to eat raw oysters in a warming world without NOAA climate data? I sure as hell ain't.
March 1, 2025 at 7:19 PM
The climate crisis is making oceans warmer and more hospitable to Vibrio bacteria. The oceans have absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions. As water temperatures rise, so does the concentration of Vibrio in seawater.

According to the Lancet, vibrio infections have broken records the last three years in a row. They also degrade ecosystems & cause mass die-offs, including commercial marine species & coral reefs.

Experts say the cost of Vibrio is already in the billions & expected to increase with climate change.
Marine heat waves, intensified by climate change and pollution, are driving the spread of Vibrio bacteria worldwide — pathogens that can cause severe illness, including cholera and “flesh-eating” infections.
Marine heat waves and raw sewage combine to put human health at risk
Earlier this year, a spate of deaths in Florida caused by Vibrio vulnificus, known as the flesh-eating bacteria, made headlines. Infections of this kind are troublingly on the rise as ocean…

Also, the CDC has stopped tracking Vibrio infections.

So basically, don't eat any oysters 🤷‍♂️
