To wander without a map is the only true way to claim a territory. Slipping between sun-baked walls and ancient, cooling shadows, letting pure instinct guide the paws through quiet, labyrinthine corridors.

#May26Challenge - Maypole Dance Unease
The Maypole Doesn’t Let Go
They thought it was a dance, until the ribbons pulled tighter.

A low, upward-looking perspective places the viewer at the center of a muddy village clearing, surrounded by a circle of women engaged in a ritual dance around a tall wooden maypole. The pole rises vertically into a gray, overcast sky, its top crowned with tangled ribbons that stretch outward like spokes. These ribbons descend in every direction, connecting each dancer to the center, forming a tightening web. The women wear aged, dirt-stained dresses in pale and earth tones, their hems soaked with mud. Flower crowns sit crookedly on their heads, some fresh, others wilted and darkened. Their hands are clasped or bound by the ribbons, and their expressions range from blank to eerily focused, as if lost to the ritual. At the center stands a young woman in a white dress, her posture slightly slumped, her hands pressed against her chest. Her dress is heavily soiled, dragging through the mud, marking her as the focal point of the ceremony. Around her, lanterns glow with warm orange light, casting flickers through the fog and mist that hang low over the ground. The background reveals dim outlines of rustic village buildings, partially obscured by haze. The composition creates a sense of enclosure, with the dancers forming a human ring that traps the central figure, while the ribbons above converge like tightening cords. The atmosphere is damp, cold, and oppressive, suggesting a ritual that is no longer celebratory but something far more binding and inescapable. This crumbling manor house once stood proud. Now? It’s more of a… fixer-upper. But with its eerie charm and overgrown walls, it makes the expat writer wonder: Who lived here? Who loved here? And who died here?

In America: “Meet me at Starbucks.”
In England: “Meet me in the 17th-century pub with a hidden passageway, old stone walls, and a mounted stag head watching your every move.” Guess where I’m having my pint? 🍺🇬🇧
