Golden-hour surprise at Lake St. Clair Metropark: a #VirginiaRail slipped out of the cattails and tiptoed the mud—my first ever. Secretive, coppery, tail flicking; more often heard than seen. A special end to the day!

A rare winter Virginia Rail in Southern Ontario. I respect the resolve to stay put and boycott the USA, but when the marsh freezes and temperatures plunge toward −20°C, it may need to reconsider migration.

I went to a local birding hotspot to see the current celebrity among local birders, a Virginia Rail. They don't usually hang around here for winter, so it was wonderful to see and photograph it 😊. I also took a couple photos of the usual suspects.
