The hooded vulture, also known as the vulturine guineafowl, dazzles with its intense blue plumage and red eyes.

But it owes its name to its bald neck, identical to that of a vulture, designed to regulate heat in arid climates.

Do animals contribute equally to group cohesion? And what can that mean for collective movement decisions?

At #ISBE2026 Turin, I’ll present how high-resolution GPS data and movement dynamics can reveal the social organization in vulturine guineafowl.

Room Berlino, 13:15, or let’s chat over lunch!

I saw an amazing movie with references to kanga (helmeted guineafowl). I did my PhD and first postdoc on vulturine guineafowl. Little did I know though about the cultural importance of kanga in Zambia (1/2)

The Vulturine Guineafowl is named for its featherless vulture-like head, but there the resemblance ends. Confronted with danger this pretty bird would rather run than fly. #birds_matter #kenya #birds

The latest result on dispersal in vulturine guineafowl: dispersing females selectively use roads to reduce the cost of transport when making large displacements.

Here's an interesting observation. Female vulturine guineafowl lose dominance interactions with other females after successful breeding but in turn are aggressed much less by males.

Cooperative breeding in a plural breeder: the vulturine guineafowl.

Very nice to see this out in @ibisjournal.bsky.social!

In this paper, we also discuss why cooperative breeding may have been under-detected in species like the vulturine guineafowl.
