Container Timing - a new W3C performance metric - has migrated from Bloomberg to the WICG Github org 🎉

@jason-williams.co.uk made the Bloomberg Terminal use this web metric to measure human-perceived time to start apps. We've found it more useful than existing metrics.

We have Custom Elements, but do we also need Custom Attributes?

This was discussed at TPAC. Is it something you'd like on the platform?

wouldn't it be nice if sites could share a cache of common js?

... stuff like react, or vue or svelte?

👉 there's an early stage proposal for cross-origin storage which enables exactly this.

there are challenges but I think it's very interesting indeed

Real DOM content in a canvas: fully searchable, translatable, inspectable.

You can have forms, add WebGL effects & much more.

Imagine if this was a customizable select 🤯

A little WIP exploration (not finished) for a very exciting API.

We've been working on a few proposals we'd like to bring to the web platform to make it easier to have more seamless navigations between pages.

@nomster.bsky.social @foolip.org and @dbaron.org presented these at W3C TPAC annual meeting last week

🤩 View Transitions Excitement!

What if, instead of calling `document.startViewTransition`, you could run a View Transition on only a subtree of the DOM by calling `element.startViewTransition`?

I must say that I'm pretty happy about the direction of the Observable spec (github.com/WICG/observa...) and its focus on processing events.

Thnx @domfarolino.com for taking time to chat about it today. And looking forward to collaborating more, especially around linking / reducing events to state.

TIL there's the WICG Web Haptics API proposal https://github.com/WICG/web-haptics

And seems like only MS Edge (156.0.4284.0, released Sept 24) implemented it experimentally https://github.com/WICG/web-haptics/blob/main/HOWTO.md

What if some client-side browsing features were part of the web platform?

Direct CSS reflection of URL state, snappy pending/optimistic UI, URL-to-scroll-snap binding, and some basic same-document navigation use cases, with JS being only an option.

Escape from event listener callback hell! 🌋

Observables are nearly here!

el.when('mousemove')
.takeUntil(document.on('mouseup'))
.subscribe({next: e => … });

Clean: takeUntil handles cleanup
Declarative & concise
Efficient: No event handling after mouse released
