Facing a crowd is always daunting but even more so when inexperienced. Katie, my MC, is lovingly pushed to perform live after discovering her talent.
The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'song' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP 'The Canary' featuring the word of the day - The day leading up to the open mic night debut was the longest day of my life. From the moment I woke up, my heart was pounding. Anxiety was the bassline to the soundtrack of my life and its tempo was spiking to a crescendo. Whitney and I had practiced for weeks on lyrics, harmony, and pitch until our cover of a popular gothic folk tune was perfected. The song flowed naturally from my lips while Whitney playfully plucked her violin, harmonizing the upper range. If we pulled it off, it would be a night none of us would ever forget.

"My name is Officer Richard Petty. I am a criminal investigator for the Wrightsville PD, you may even have seen me up at the courthouse." Not a soul replied, the man nodding in acknowledgment of his own flat attempts to be relatable. "While we're aware that summer break is approaching fast and that many of you have plans to travel and gather. We are not telling you to change your plans. However, in the face of consistent threats to safety, we are asking everyone to have an…. accountabi… accountabilibuddy," he said, reaching a card on the podium. More laughter ensued, but dulled at the sight of teachers sour faces.

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'skull' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP 'The Canary' featuring the word of the day - Heart racing, I blinked the burning mid-dream agony from my eyes. I pressed my palms into my eye sockets, sighed every ounce of air from my body, and sucked the breath back in slowly. The oxygen reminded me I was alive, that the dream I'd survived was just that: a dream. It was the same one as before, a sign I hadn't gotten the right message from it the first time. Even so, the realism was terrifying. My fingers hesitantly reached up over my skull where the blow and landed. Whole, as expected. Relief washed over me as I slowly got to my feet.

This shows a screenshot from an online word processor filled with test. The text reads: My brain was busy attempting—and failing—to comprehend what I was seeing. For half a second the fox-thing—a Vulret—blinked back at me. Then it apparently remembered it had been running from something. It quickly turned its entire body—folding somewhere near its center—and lunged in another direction. But that brief moment of hesitation cost it dearly. I watched as a large chocolate colored hand shot into view, catching the Vulret around the neck and lifting it from the ground. That’s when I first met Akon. He picked up the Vulret—and with his free hand, bonked it on the head, knocking it out—before sliding it into the bag at his waist. That’s when he noticed me.

Having struck out all week (apart from "alien" yesterday), this WIPSnip is neither a snip nor from a WIP. It is an illustration from "The Scriptorium Chronicle", published in April this year, which has sold a grand total of 1 copy (which got a 5* rating from whoever bought it)(not me).

After he was certain we had heard him, Bradford's face softened and curled into a full cheeked grin like a mall Santa. "Good. Look after the place for us, alright? We'll be back Monday morning. Try not to burn the place down while I'm gone," he teased, walking back into the house and disappearing to help his family load the car.

Everyone was on edge about the curfew. Not because they were cautiously keeping to it like obedient sheep, but because so many students couldn't care less, missing people be damned. All afternoon, people had been cracking jokes about being the next victim of the body snatcher. It would just be easier if they cared about their safety. The longer the case dragged on, the more it felt like I was the only one that really cared at all. It was a strange and alienating feeling.

She loved that I was brainy to a fault, professing she'd been intellectually starving for conversation. She adored my obsessive fixation on the macabre and taboo, never shying away from any topic I brought up. She stood tall at the altar of my flaws and admired the architecture with awe. The very things I was made to be were not demonized in her eyes. They weren't flaws, but underappreciated facets. When I was deep in my depression, she spelunked into the dark with me, always offering a guiding hand back towards the light.

"I'm Denadria's avatar and Denadria demands that you go to the Nuhara quarter and arrest all Nuharas guilty of religionism!" "That's all of them!" said the old cop. "Well, that should make it easy to decide who to arrest," said Aublelma. "What if we don't?" asked the nibey. "I have no authority to arrest anybody," said Aublelma, "so I'll go to the Nuhara quarter with some powerful magi and kill everybody you've told me is guilty." "We haven't ..." said the young cop. "Oh feces!" We started walking out the station. The old cop pulled something out of his pocket; there was a bang and his brains were splattered all over the ceiling. "Contact everybody!" said the police nibey. "Tell them to get their families and get the fornication out of town!"

Turning the ring over in my hand, I felt a deep pang of guilt. All I could hope was that it wasn't the story my mind was stitching together in my head. With a heavy sigh, I packed the items away like the final possessions in a casket, lowering the box back into its crypt beneath the floors. With a hard smack to the wood, the plank wedged itself back into place.

Dark Mode Snippet from The Ice Queen & the Fire King... The first chapter: Being called to Lucifer’s office was not how I wanted to start my weekend. The fact that he’d called me to his home office wasn’t comforting. He could have talked with me while I was at the Preternatural and Mythical Creatures Agency in Los Angeles this afternoon, but instead he’d inconspicuously slipped me a note to come here after he left the office for the day. I didn’t have a problem with him. We usually worked well together. He was my contact in the Los Angeles Branch, for Maker’s sake. So why ask me to meet at his home office? Probably on a non-Agency matter, or he couldn’t get the Director, his daughter, to sign off on it. Either way, I’d at least listen to him. I raised my hand to knock, and the left of the French doors slowly swung inward. I stood there, poised to knock, and blinked at the empty office. He didn’t usually pull this spooky crap with me. I stepped inside, pulling a small dagger with its crossbar handle out of the sheath on my thigh. “You won’t need a weapon, Ice Queen,” Lucifer’s deep voice called from the near darkness behind the door. I stepped to the right, in front of the other door, and waited until he shut his door to move at all. The lights slowly rose and, when I could see him, I slipped the dagger into the sheath again. “You don’t trust me?”

I had no idea how hot I'd gotten inside the dance hall. I raked my hands over the top of my head and sighed. Everything itched suddenly and I felt claustrophobic in my clothes. I unbuttoned the top two buttons on the dress shirt to expose the camisole underneath, just to feel a breeze. My hand reached up and undid the hair style my mom had carefully put together, pulling the bobby pins into my hands and stuffing them away.

I can totally skip this #WIPSnip cause I don’t use this word at all. I mean no one in my group of MCs has such debilitating phobia. 😅

But for ✨vibes✨ here is a small section after Aldous convinces “Sandy”, that taking the tunnels was the best option. (This is Aldous’s POV and he’s watching Heiden).
She nodded, but her limp becoming exaggerated as she took small steps towards the low tunnel. She made a quiet whimper as they went in. Ultimately though, it didn’t take long until they found a pace they could manage. They continued deeper, but Heiden wasn’t doing well. Overwhelmed, she didn’t attempt conversation. She had one hand out, touching the wall, as if it was the only thing keeping her up. They swung around a corner and Heiden accidentally kicked a skull. It tumbled forward and into the cluster of bones it came from. Part of the tunnel had collapsed but didn’t block the way ahead, just made a small space even tighter. She just stared at it, leaning her weight into the wall, as if she couldn’t keep her balance. Her breaths became short and shallow. She dropped her reins and slowly slid down the wall onto  the floor. Jade Lawrence
