#WORLDRABIESDAY
As #WorldRabiesDay comes to an end, our message is simple.

Rabies is deadly. Rabies is preventable.

Vaccinate dogs. Reach street dogs. Protect communities. Follow the evidence.

Fear doesn't stop rabies.

Vaccination does.

Rabies is preventable.

WHO says vaccinating at least 70% of dogs in areas at risk is the most effective way of preventing human rabies deaths.

The answer is vaccination. Not fear. Not persecution. Not indiscriminate killing.

Killing dogs doesn't stop rabies.

WHO says there is no evidence that removing dogs alone has significantly affected the spread of rabies.

Yet dogs continue to pay the price when authorities reach for killing instead of effective disease control.

Today is #WorldRabiesDay.

Rabies is deadly. It is also preventable.

And protecting people from rabies does not require us to wage war on dogs.

Today we're going to talk about what actually works.

Rabies prevention is part of our work.

We've helped vaccinate dogs against rabies across 7 countries:

Romania • Egypt • Türkiye • Afghanistan • Pakistan • India • Sri Lanka

Different countries. Different communities. The same goal. Protect dogs. Protect people.

If a government kills thousands of dogs in the name of public safety but fails to achieve adequate vaccination coverage, has it controlled rabies?

Or has it simply reduced the number of dogs people can see?

🐕 Rabies is preventable, yet it continues to claim lives.

On #WorldRabiesDay, @fao.org highlights the importance of dog vaccination, surveillance and stronger animal health systems to stop rabies at its source and protect communities.

Last year, scientists developed an innovative way to vaccinate the bats against rabies—by making use of their extraordinary fondness of mutual grooming. #WorldRabiesDay https://scim.ag/4yeJbVW

A dog living on the street isn't a rabid dog.

A stray dog isn't automatically a public health threat.

When fear of rabies becomes fear of dogs, good public health policy can very quickly become bad animal welfare policy.

We need to know the difference.

When govs say stray dogs must disappear because of rabies, we should be asking questions.

How many have been vaccinated?

What percentage of the population is that?

Is surveillance is taking place?

Is treatment available to people who are bitten?

Where is the control strategy?

2. Vaccination is a critical part of Trap-Neuter-Return (#TNR), which is the best opportunity for community cats to be vaccinated for rabies. For that reason, and many more, TNR is the only humane and effective approach to community cats.
