Motorists are being encouraged to see if they can receive money from a compensation scheme relating to car deliveries. In 2018, the European Commission ruled that shipping companies, including MOL, K Line, NYK, WWL/EUKOR and CSAV, had fixed prices for the transport of vehicles. ### The companies were fined €395million (£340million) for taking part in "cartels" in breach of EU antitrust rules, with all businesses settling and acknowledging their involvement. In response, the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has approved a plan to distribute £55.87million in compensation for those impacted. This will include drivers and businesses who purchased or leased new cars or vans from 37 different automakers between October 18, 2006, and September 6, 2015. Drivers could receive compensation if they purchased vehicles from the likes of Ford, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Peugeot, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota, Citroen, Renault, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia between the two dates. ### ### ### Mark McLaren, a former Which? consumer expert, first brought the case to the Competition Appeal Tribunal in 2020, before a resolution was reached yesterday. He is now urging motorists to report if they may have been affected, as they could receive compensation for any issues. People or businesses will receive £25 for the first eligible vehicle, £5 if they had between two and six vehicles, and £2.50 for each extra eligible vehicle. "Those already signed up will be contacted as soon as the distribution is open and will be directed to our online claim form to get back the money you're owed." ### ### He noted that work had been done to make the process as easy as possible for those who were overcharged for new vehicles through hidden agreements. Businesses can apply for compensation if they bought new vehicles for car rental, delivery, construction, maintenance, and fleet management companies. PA reported that an estimated 17.8 million vehicles in the UK were affected by the overcharge between 2006 and 2015, with around 80 per cent of all new vehicles in the UK being shipped from abroad.
