Today's #WaferThinBook: December, by Alexander Kluge and Gerhard Richter, tr. Martin Chalmers (2010/2021, 118p.)
Richter's stunning photos of a snow-covered forest interspersed with 39 stories, 1-2 per day, some historical, some autobiographical, some fictional, all about the elasticity of time.

In Seattle for two hours and already collected a small stack of #WaferThinBooks from the legendary Magus Books in the U District.

One of several entertaining #WaferThinBooks by Roger Grenier.

See 🧵 for two more.
I read A Box of Photographs, by Roger Grenier (Chicago, 2013; translated by Alice Kaplan). Collected here are anecdotes from a busy life (Resistance partisan, journalist, Gallimard editor) that have to do, however tangentially, with photography.

2024 was the year of #WaferThinBooks. 366 daily posts with suggestions of (mostly) under-150 page long books to accompany our WaferThinBooks.com reading group.

I'll continue to post occasional recommendations, but the daily posts are at an end. I hope you found a few books worth reading.

Devoting the year to reading #WaferThinBooks turns out to have little effect on my book buying. Indeed, it seems to have made it worse.

On this date in 2023, I offered ten #WaferThinBooks (under 150 pages long) of nonfiction selected from the pages of NeglectedBooks.com. I'm pleased to say that two (Malachi Whitaker's And So Did I and Christopher Burney's Solitary Confinement) have since been reissued.

We lost power, so I went to a bookstore to avoid freezing to death. All #WaferThinBooks (well, Eve Babitz slightly over at 162p., but who's counting?)

Today's #WaferThinBook: Old New York (1924) is a collection of four novellas by Edith Wharton that portrays New York society between the 1840s and 1870s. It was originally published in a beautiful boxed set by D. Appleton & Co. (more)

The final stack from three days of paying calls on Seattle bookstores. Not many neglected, but all certified #WaferThinBooks. Feel free to prioritize my TBR list with any recommendations.

Some Melville House editor may simply have become fixated on books titled The Duel. (To be fair, the other four are legitimately novellas.)

New on NeglectedBooks.com: A guest post by David Quantick on The Young Immigrunts, Ring Lardner's hilarious riff on Daisy Ashford's precocious tale, The Young Visiters (both #WaferThinBooks, by the way):

Something about traveling by train offers a perennial formula for good fiction. Time spent on a train is sort of a hiatus from everyday life. No surprise, then, that so many novelists have been attracted to the setting. Here are ten #WaferThinBooks set on trains.

#2 on Irina's list of tips is: "Befriend the novella."

Just a reminder that, although the #WaferThinBooks group is over, there's still a ton of novella recommendations, plus profiles of the 12 books we read, to be found at waferthinbooks.com.

Probably the most Viennese of books is Zweig's memoir The World of Yesterday. After that, a Schnitzler or two (they're #WaferThinBooks). Or for something more obscure, Edith de Born's The House in Vienna.

A visit to the paperback-stuffed basement of the Montana Valley Bookstore in Alberton to pick up some candidates for the #WaferThinBooks reading group next year. It's harder and harder to find places where you can browse mass market paperbacks from the 1950s and 1960s.

The #WaferThinBooks of Martin Guerre:

1. The Wife of Martin Guerre by Janet Lewis (Swallow, 116p.)
The famous tale of the man who returns after 8 years and claims to be Martin, husband of Bertrande, only to be proved an impostor, as told by the wife who accepted him as real.
