I was born just down the road in Walkergate. Ships towering over the houses like that is a familiar sight. I remember going to see the launch of the similarly huge Esso Northumbria in 1969.
Every time I come across this photo it completely stops me in my tracks. Crude oil supertanker Esso Hibernia under construction at Swan Hunter shipyard, Wallsend, during 1970. The scale and spectacle of this thing is incomprehensible. (📸 Harriet Berney)

Might know by now that I love a good utility cover, and this is the first time I’ve seen one from Willington Quay!
It was owned by Brigham & Co who also produced marine engines for Tyneside ships. This one was probably placed here at Walkergate in the 1920s.

I was a Green candidate in the Walkergate ward in Newcastle today. Sadly, the Nazis won the 3 seats. I got 504 votes, which I'm pretty proud of.

I've popped on the Colliery Engine Inn at Walkergate to the site, part of a row dating back around 180 years before demolition in the 2000s. Here's a fantastic shot from about 1912.

The one that always gets me right in the feels is the woman I worked with who said, "I always wanted to be a marine biologist. But I'm just a girl from Walkergate, we can't do that kind of thing." and the look of loss in her eyes breaks my heart whenever I think of it. 😞
I worked with many talented people in call centers and factories who will never get the chance to express that talent because they are working all available hours to make ends meet.
We likely already have more than a 'thousands Mozarts,' but many lack the time or financial resources to express their talent, often working for minimum wage at disgusting companies like Amazon.

So we'll start with the Colliery Engine Inn which we see below. As noted, Walker Station (or Walkergate as its now known) was a colliery hamlet, flanked entirely by coal workings, until the mid 19th century.

The Ringtons Welfare Ground, Walkergate (1930s - ?)
The welfare ground opened and funded by Ringtons Tea for their employees. They had their own teams, Ringtons FC, who played in the Northern Amateur League against Percy Main, Gosforth Parish etc. Now home to Newcastle Benfield.

Yeah Corbridge, but he grew up in Walkergate. Lived in Selby Gardens for a bit just off the Fossway, went to Benfield School.
