Never, never, comes tear or sorrow
In the mansions old where the fairies dwell
But only the harping of their sweet harp-strings
&the lonesome stroke of a distant bell.

"In the black furrow of a field
I saw an old witch-hare this night;
And she cocked a lissome ear,
And she eyed the moon so bright,
And she nibbled of the green"
Walter de la Mare (1901)

"Gleaming with irised hues,
Afloat in light it swims—
A tiny globe of rainbow-trembling dew,
Then—gone! Like some bright dream
That leaves the waking air
Still sighing for its loveliness." Walter de la Mare (1913)

I thought I'd share with you this lovely 1926 1st edition of the #WalterdelaMare collection, 'The Connoisseur', which features the brilliant, 'All Hallows'.
Tucked inside, for the last 100 years, is this letter from E.H. Simpson of William Collins, Sons & Co. Limited.
I love this sort of thing.

I've read #Quincunx, a short story collection by #WalterDeLaMare.

Weird, not always compelling, not always easy to follow, but always very well written and classy. Still, it's not one of the best collections I've read lately.

7/10.

But only ahost ofphantom listeners
That dwelt inthelonehouse then
Stood listening inthequiet moonlight
To thatvoice fromtheworldofmen:
Stood thronging thefaint moonbeams onthedarkstair
That goesdown totheemptyhall
Hearkening in an air stirred&shaken
By the lonely Traveller’s call.

Winkum, twankum, twirlum&twitch—
My greatgrandam— She was a Witch;
Mouse in wainscot, Saint in niche—
Mygreatgrandam— She was a Witch;
Deadly nightshade flowers in a ditch—
Mygreatgranda— She was a Witch;
Long tho the shroud, it grows stitchbystitch —
Mygreatgrandam— She was a Witch.

Never theleast stir made thelisteners
Tho every word he spake
Fell echoing thru theshadowiness of thestillhouse
From the one man left awake:
Ay they heard his foot upon the stirrup
&the sound of iron on stone
&how the silence surged softly backward
When the plunging hoofs were gone.

SEATON’S UNCLE
Under the disguise of an AI, this may be a brand new story by WALTER DE LA MARE’s invoked ghost? I’ll let you decide.

And the buds that break
Out of the brier's boughs,
When March winds wake,
So old with their beauty are -
Oh, no man knows
Through what wild centuries
Roves back the rose ..."
