#Wannamakers
again, why was the department store a successful model? Cause every retail experience in America was 90% scams by volume and the Wannamakers and such invented things like "You can know what a product looks like and costs before you buy it"

The department store was also a response to every American retail experience being 90% scams by volume with the Wannamakers and the like innovating things like “you can know how much somethig costs before you buy it”

Philadelphia might be a special case as they still call the center city Macy's "Wannamakers" but this is true, politicians don't have this power over language.
Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia was renamed Christopher Columbus Blvd. 40 years ago. Nobody, nowhere calls it that. Businesses give their address as “Delaware Avenue.”

My high school has one of the former eagles from wannamakers, which I think is cool. But the light show and organ are much more important obviously!!

I once got my head, stuck in a fixture in Wannamakers Department store in Philadelphia, when I was five years old.

Are you old enough to remember the monorail train Wannamakers suspended from the ceiling on the top floor, toy department?

When I come to the Philly con center I always think of my grandma. Her Mennonite Aunt used to take her from Lancaster to Philly by train to shop on market then lunch at wannamakers. There was this tight knit group of older mennonite folks who did this journey often.

I don't really feel much for Macy's. Trying to shop there was underwhelming. The only reason I went there was for the organ, light show, and Christmas Village. I hope the organ finds a home.
