#Warof1870 Gambetta as a cockerel. From the figures in the background it’s clear other heads were available.

#Warof1870 I was always struck by the idea of German #FWW soldiers marching past this monument to the renowned commander of the 2ème armée de la Loire, General Chanzy in his birthplace- Buzancy (08) - until I recently discovered that this was a replacement only erected in 1958.

Frontier Post (Poteau frontière) from Forbach (Moselle (57)).
Installed by the Prussians after their victory in 1871, it was removed from the then-border by the French following the Treaty of Versailles of 1919 #Warof1870

“A country violated and laid waste by an invader, or even beaten in war, will never forget and never rest until it has had its revenge. From 1871 until 1914 the statue of Strasbourg in the Place de la Concorde was shrouded in mourning, and France was to dream of La Revanche.” #Warof1870 #history

5/ It’s always my intention to blog more about the trips I make & things discovered. Work & family commitments often limit me from doing so. Hopefully, I’ll have some opportunities soon for more about #greener battlefield tourism, how important the #Warof1870 was to #1GM & individuals’ #FWW stories

An expression that is similar to “It never rains, but it pours” but which references the biggest battle of the #Warof1870 (the “Franco-Prussian War”).
According to the excellent Musée de la Guerre de 1870 et de l'Annexion, a battle that produced over 75,000 casualties & ended #OTD in 1870.

Some modern #historians of the #FWW #WW1 seem to have difficulty with the effects of the German annexation of #Alsace and #Lorraine after the #Warof1870.
A German city that’s about 12 kms from the border with France in 2026 was >90km further away in 1914! #maps

3/ The original statue in Buzancy was erected in 1884. However, it was dismantled and melted down during the Vichy regime in the Second World War.
Which revives again the tantalising image of #FWW German soldiers marching past a statue of a French hero of the #Warof1870.

“Well, it’s going well so far”.

#OTDIH 2 August 1870. The French capture (briefly) Saarbrücken.

French troops for the attack were told they “should take something to eat, as it is not known at what time they will return to camp in the evening.”

A medal commemorating pupils from the French School of Fine Arts who died in the #Warof1870 designed by Charles Degeorge (1837 - 1888).

I saw this and meant to share. The opportunity has perhaps passed but maybe visiting the battlefield in June or July rather than being there in December is worth mentioning #WarOf1870.

The departure of Léon Gambetta from a besieged Paris in the balloon “Armand-Barbès” on 7 Oct 1870 as depicted in this painting by Jules Didier & Jacques Guiaud, now in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris.
The museum displays connected to the #Warof1870 & the #SiegeofParis are well worth seeing. #Guerre1870

One of many artistic evocations of the “lost provinces” - Alsace & Lorraine from the period post #Warof1870. “When will you return?” asks the woman (an allegorical representation of Lorraine) of the French soldier.
Produced within the annexed territories, it shows pro-France sentiment remained.

…Bismarck left French overseas possessions intact. Whatever her losses and her humiliation, France remained a Great Power: too great, indeed, for German peace of mind during the coming forty years.”

A “CPA” depicting memorials of the #Warof1870 around the commune of Habonville (54). Sadly, on my recent visit, I was disappointed to find the bronze sleeping lion of the Großherzoglich Hessische (25.) Division weighing something like 2-300 kgs had been stolen and all that remains is the plinth.

2/ The present statue takes its model as the figure of Alfred Chanzy on the monument in Le Mans that’s similar to this one at le musée de l’Armée in Paris.
Chanzy’s name, associated with France’s continued fight after the key defeats of the #Warof1870, was adopted by several #SWW resistance groups.
