One of our multi-trunked oaks at Wardsend. Presumably cut down when young but determined to flourish in the older wooded part of the cemetery.

In addition to the 11 nest boxes and owl box installed over the past two years we now have three tree creeper boxes at Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park. Part of the wider Wardsend Cemetery local wildlife site we continue to play our part in nature recovery.

This Holditch family portrait was taken by photographer William T. Furniss who is buried at Wardsend. I can't find anyone by the name of Holditch buried at Wardsend but I rather liked it and thought someone on here might recognise them.

At Wardsend larger memorials to 'the great and the good' are a bit thin on the ground reflecting its predominantly working class character.
However what it lacks in elaborate monuments it more than makes up for in magic, mystery, dappled light on old stones, masons' art and countless stories untold.

Looking for something else on the internet and spotted this painting. Wardsend Viaduct, more commonly known as Five Arches, painted around 1840.
The pond is what used to be called Rawson, and later Oxspring, Dam after the occupants of Wardsend House. The railway runs through Wardsend Cemetery.

We had a little friend keeping us company for part of our walk round the cemetery this morning. Next time I'm taking mealworms.

Wardsend Cemetery in Sheffield, neglected for decades, has become a haven for wildlife. With nearly 30,000 burials the cemetery sits on both sides of the old Sheffield to Manchester railway line on a steep hillside overlooking the River Don. We are currently developing a conservation management plan

Autumn light at Wardsend, where decades of neglect have created a beautiful, hidden space in our busy city where heritage and nature combine.
