It's supposed to feel awkward because it's a bunch of young adults. Young adults aren't perfect.
Harassing the creator so much that the the pilot was taken down and tons of "this is cringe" slop videos just makes it more disappointing.

idk why it got such a weird amount of hate from people for a while, it's such a fun little pilot. sure the dialogue and humour isn't for everyone, but i love how 2000s/early 2010s it feels

and wastelandia isn't the only indie pilot/animation that got hate for dumb reasons - it feels like every new indie thing that comes out and gets popular gets shat on for the most nitpicky none-issues (like gameoverse and planetronika for example)

Say what you want about Wastelandia or Planetronika or The Gaslight District or The Homestuck pilot, but they are literally just trying to do what Adult Swim has been kind of afraid to do for the last few years. It's to experiment and to Make something for a specific niche of audience.
