Watsonian dril scholars trying to determine precisely how many wives and uncles he had

Why is Husk not in the new Lvl Up poster?

Doylist answer: They only included the characters of the voice actors attending.

Watsonian answer: They knew better than to bring Husk to Vegas

one of my grumpier opinions is i don't like when people use watsonian and doylist in serious discussions. just say diagetic please watsoninan makes you sound like you learned everything you know about criticism from tv tropes

a lot of queer & trans people functionally make watsonian vs doylist arguments or thermian arguments on the question of "rep" and it makes media critique and analysis basically impossible. characters are not real human beings.

Watsonian but less angsty: minf did not give a fuck and couldn’t be assed to remember

King: what exactly is the point of this again
Armentraut: well the doylist explanation is its a booktok gimmick
Armentraut: but the watsonian explanation is its to keep away the craven

No Love has no male main characters. Doylist explanation is because I animate a lot of men in my day jobs so I take my personal projects as a chance to animate women. Watsonian explanation is that a lot of the male career criminals in the setting got drafted to war

From a Watsonian perspective, I just don’t think MCU Spidey has the sauce. Like he straight up could not run with Iron Man in Afghanistan or Captain America in the Ardennes.
The Punisher ripping a dude's throat out by the trachea in front of a crying, vomiting Tom Holland.

Tl;dr something something watsonian doylist, something something book 3 has marvel movie ethics, something something we often forget with the separation of many years how much Peeta is kind of a condescending jerk throughout the first two books, something something Gale is cool

but yeah. in-universe, I assume the watsonian explanation is just "anthros and non-anthro animals evolved from some distant shared ancestor", similar to how us* Homo sapiens sapiens evolved from a shared common ancestor with, like, gibbons.

And finally, to defray accusations of "you're taking this too seriously" and "the writers didn't have a system" and "it moves at the speed of plot,"

I know! I'm writing a Watsonian explanation, not a Doylist one. This is fun for me, and how I enjoy spending my time.

Watsonian versus Doylist - TV Tropes
When a creator answers a question about their work, should they provide an In-Universe answer or a Real Life answer? The former is the Watsonian perspective, the latter Doylist. The terms note (which...

Oh y'know what else we could call this...

Watsonian Kink: the characters have the kink within the context of the narrative

Doyleist Kink: the author and readers are kinking on the characters being subjected to certain situations
It makes such a big difference to a story whether it's about characters who have a certain kink or whether it's written for readers who have a certain kink.
I mean both are possible at the same time, too, but they do occur separately, and we still don't have a good shorthand to differentiate.

Yeah, but I’ll always take a convoluted Watsonian explanation over a simple Doylist one. 😇

This is a weird meta-level of Watsonian and Doylist.

If I am talking about Watsonian critiques, please don't come to me with your Doylist defense
If I am talking about Doylist critiques, please don't come to me with your Watsonian defense

There's a reason we discuss these things separately, we will simply not be having the same conversation

I have learned that my "internet best friend" has started using the terms Watsonian and Doylist after I publicly used them in a few videos, despite never using them before and clearly not understanding what these terms mean.

...is my life a comedy?

Reposting so I can pin this. Below is part of a thread I wrote including my Watsonian redefinition of the term “Star Destroyer”
Previous type entries have made note of the appropriate deployment of a particular type, with special regard to campaign operations. Star Destroyer as defined here overrides those generalized parameters. It is the assessment of [Redacted] to append the designation “Star Destroyer”…
