Quantum Corridor, Ciena, and Toshiba Complete World’s First 1.6 Tb/s Quantum-Safe Optical Encryption Milestone on Live Commercial Network
Ciena (NYSE: CIEN), Quantum Corridor, and Toshiba have completed a trial of 1.6 Tb/s quantum-safe optical encryption over Quantum Corridor’s live commercial network between data centers in Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. The test used Ciena’s Waveserver platform with WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) to deliver wire-speed AES-256-GCM encryption, combining NIST-certified post-quantum cryptography (PQC) with interworking to Toshiba’s quantum key distribution (QKD) servers for quantum-generated keys.The trial also validated coexistence with existing WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) 800G encrypted traffic on the same photonic line system, and showed that current WL5e deployments can gain PQC support via a software upgrade. According to Ciena, this hybrid PQC/QKD approach offers network operators a practical migration path to quantum-safe networking and addresses “harvest now, decrypt later” threats without wholesale infrastructure replacement.
