"So, it turns out that I misunderstood author Roberto Bolaño when he said that a writer's home is a bookstore. He meant books, but I thought he meant writers, as I've always thought of the bookstore as more my home than my actual home. This is where I could live as many lives as I wanted, or as many as I could pick from the bookshelf. The original safe space; where I could travel a thousand miles by simply turning a page. I remember going to the bookstore every day to read a few pages of The Satanic Verses because I was too scared to take it home and – this is important – the bookstore allowing me. I love the perfume of new books on the shelf, the musk of old books, the big fat cat on the windowsill minding his own business, the bookseller excitedly telling you what to read next. It’s the only place where you enter as one person and leave as someone else."

"I love everything about bookshops, especially small independent ones, where the owners are obsessed, where they know a lot about books and writers, and they can help you choose a book. And I like the smell of new books, and the fact that you can browse for hours: no one pesters you to buy in a bookshop. And increasingly, bookshops sell coffee and cake, and make you feel at home. It can be like a club, almost a community centre; a vital part of a country town. My favourite is Jaffé & Neale in Chipping Norton, where you can be certain to find one of the owners in the shop."
