For today’s #Wednesday100, have a Jamie hospital scene. I started from the following premise: what if Denny and Claire met in a Modern AU because he was her surgeon, so they didn’t already know each other? Carries a few echoes of Season 7B, but not nearly as dire.
Sickness and Health “Thought I told you not to stay all night,” Claire says. Her voice is thin, no brightness in it. “Appendectomies are routine procedures, you know that.” There will never be anything routine, Jamie thinks, about seeing her lovely face tear-streaked with pain. Only his desperate need to calm the bairns had kept his hands steady as he’d called Murtagh. “That Denny Hunter is a braw surgeon, they say. His task’s done, and mine isna.” “Everything’s still a bit blurry,” Claire confesses. “Except for you.” Jamie kisses her forehead. “Then hold tight to me, mo ghraidh. It’s what I’m here for.”

As promised, this week’s #Wednesday100 is all domestic fluff. Fergus, in a modern AU, bringing Marsali home for the first time. Going back to one of my favorite wells: J and C’s adult children working around the reality that you always risk walking in on them if you’re not careful. 😂
First Impressions As Marsali buckles her seatbelt, Fergus opens his WhatsApp thread with his parents—Faith and Bree are at Lallybroch. “Are you two properly dressed? There in fifteen.” He gets a selfie back, taken with a timer—Maman is laughing up at his father, evening light in their hair. Papa is thrilled Gaelic was Marsali’s first language. Maman basks in his smile, reminding Fergus of Adso napping in a sunbeam. Later, they take him aside. Papa grins and says, “She’s verra clever, that one.” “Don’t you start liking Marsali more than me.” “Impossible,” Maman adds gently. “You stole our hearts first.”

Work events have a way of inspiring modern au drabbles, so please enjoy my double-drabble mashup of return flight antics featuring a medical emergency and a couple tagteaming an adorable baby! #wednesday100
I. He's only seen it happen in films before, but when a flight attendant calls over the speakers for a doctor, Jamie watches his wife jump into action. Thankfully, Bree has fallen asleep in his arms, tucked against the window, and before the announcement finishes, Claire is unbuckled and vaulting over the tiny grandmother in the aisle seat to make her way towards the back of the plane where someone collapsed. He can't even see, weighted by the sleeping baby, but he can hear Claire's steady voice keeping them all calm — there's no one better in a medical crisis than her. II. There are more than one who answer the call for help — their flight is boasting of two doctors and four nurses — and between them, they manage to assist the elderly man who passed out and put the flight attendants at ease. When the excitement ends, Claire spots Jamie's ruddy curls towering above his headrest and makes her way back to her seat. "No rest for the good doctor," Jamie says fondly, proudly. "Even on holiday." Bree has slept through the hubbub; Claire takes her dimpled hand in her own, her still-racing heart slowing. "Suppose we can rest when we land."

For today’s #Wednesday100, I went back to the angst well. Here’s Claire, at Disneyland during the twenty year separation, realizing how much it’s not for her. Title is taken from Disney’s “Cinderella.”
How Your Heart Is Grieving At Disneyland, Brianna is fascinated with the mechanical rides. And even she can’t resist stories of handsome princes and happily ever afters.   Claire can admit that it’s possible to take a horseback ride, arrive at a castle, and suddenly find yourself married. True love’s kiss is real, but it can’t overpower time.   Claire is a stranger in California, possibly more than she ever was at Leoch. She smiles for Brianna, but she will never long for endless sunshine. The truest magic spell she’s ever known was Jamie’s. He wrapped her in it, like his plaid, whenever he called her “Sassenach.”

All done with my big work conference and I *think* I can take some time off next week. Current WIP has less than six chapters left to draft so I’m crossing my fingers the writing brain will cooperate. I wrote a drabble before I left and one between panels, so #Wednesday100 is set for a bit.

"There she is!" Claire grinned as she entered the faculty check-in room, Joe straying from the group of surgeons in conversation to greet her. For every year she'd attended the conference, Joe was there too — her friend in and outside the hospital. "And I see you brought the future Dr. Fraser as well." Claire cupped the back of Brianna's head where she was snug against Claire's chest. "Jamie's here too. He thought Bree should hear Mumma present her surgical case." She knew Bree wouldn't ever remember it; she liked having her family with her for this milestone just the same.

Title is from Tennyson’s “Ulysses” and means “to drink life to the fullest.” More or less.
Drink Life to the Lees “Look at them, gigglin’ like children over good whisky,” Jenny says, shaking her head at Brianna and Marsali as they run up the stairs with their bounty. “Not the best,” Claire points out, sliding the hidden panel loose and producing their shared favorite. “We’ll let them think they’ve gotten away with something.” “And now we ken Marsali’s no’ pregnant yet. I’m surprised Fergus let her out o’ his sight. Or that Jamie let you out o’ his. I suppose you told him you’ve missed me, so he’d go off wi’ Ian.” “I only told the truth. Drink up, will you?”

Frank approached the nursery with practicality, focusing on necessities, only asking advice with frivolous matters — the kinds of baby clothes and nappies that required a woman's perspective. Claire preferred not to think about it. Unfortunately, belly prominently expanded, it was all anyone would speak of. "You must've gotten something for the baby!" Millie said. Which was how Claire found herself perusing baby items to assuage her guilt. When her gaze fell to a stuffed bunny, she thought, Floppy… And when Brianna grew and loved that first gift best, Claire thought maybe she could see herself in their girl after all.

Growing Pains “Faith loves LSE, Jamie.”  When Jamie makes a skeptical noise, John adds, “I promise she doesn’t need to move into our guest room.” John and Hector’s twins were in the NICU too. They all know what it is to parent surrounded by wires and monitors. Where alarms nearly drown out loving words. Where hope is measured in ounces, and deep breaths are miracles.   After they hang up, Claire takes Jamie’s face in her hands. “She was so small, Sassenach. You remember.”   “She was.  But she’s strong. Like always.”    Faith calls in the morning, and Jamie’s smile is its own sunrise.

Reunion and Rediscovery Brianna sets three glasses on the table, and waits for her parents. “Roger told you we met Grandda Brian. I did my best to tell him you’re happy.”   “You couldna tell him the truth of you.” “But I could tell him my father found the love of his life.” “You chose the right thing, m’anssachd.” As Mama reaches for him, he calls her a new nickname. Or an old one. Life with her parents is always a translation exercise, and not just because her Gaelic is rusty. Tomorrow, she’ll ask Ian what “Sorcha” means.     She lifts her glass. “To home.”

I would say “Happy #Wednesday100” except this one is angsty and set during the 20 Year Separation. I was thinking about how Claire’s tradition of diner cheeseburgers with Bree might have started.
Accounting for Taste III Claire agrees with Eliot. Since Culloden, April is the cruelest month. May only brings more thoughts of graves she cannot visit, and names she cannot speak. May is for Faith and Jamie both. In every season, Claire raises Brianna in a world Jamie never knew. But she is certain he would want their daughter as far from the hungry days of the Rising as possible. This spring, Frank teaches late on Tuesdays. She closes her eyes, imagines them at Carmi’s. They’ll order alarmingly large cheeseburgers. Bree’s hair will gleam red-gold as the daylight learns to linger. Smiling will be easier.

Jamie raises a questioning eyebrow at her.  “Oh, you’ll know when I’ve won, darling. Don’t worry.”

Family Harmony Ian pauses in the hall. Jamie is standing a few steps back from the parlor doorway. Even from here, Ian makes out Claire swearing in French. Brianna laughing. Jamie knows the sound of his gait and makes room for him without a word. Ian keeps his own voice a whisper as he says, “Isn’t this the second time she’s tried teachin’ Claire to clickit?” “Third,” Jamie says. “And you arena goin’ to go and help, because you like listenin’ better,” Ian says. Claire grumbles about how surgery is easier. Jamie smiles. “It’s like music, but I can hear it fine.”

Wednesday 100: Forward and Back There are so many things Claire has wanted to forget yet hasn't entirely been able to, so many things that she's needed to box up and shove away so she can possibly continue onward — blank eyes and warm, pouring blood and the bangs and whimpers of death. She thinks that all of this — the confusion of this rough, insensible place, the Frank who wasn't, the obvious distance from home — will be something to box away too. But as the injured Scot…as Jamie holds her close and tucks her warm, a part of her says, "Remember. You must remember this.”

How did you find me, anyway?”   “You’re predictable, Sassenach.”   “Am I?”   “Aye,” Jamie says, all posed casualness as he circles her. “You never pick a closet unless there’s a window.”   “Just because I’m hiding doesn’t mean I don’t want natural light.”   “And,” he interrupts, “You canna resist me so there’s always a proper door to bolt. And room for both of us.”   “Or you can’t resist me. I simply plan for the inevitable.”   Jamie pulls her hair free and steals her next breath with a searing kiss. This game is better.

He reaches for her, “Olivia?” “No. You didn't always come back to me.” The truth of the statement takes a moment to sink in. He didn't come back, once. He fucked up; he had no idea. He wonders if she's going to eviscerate him, instead, she closes her eyes and shakes her head, allowing silence to fill the space for a few seconds. “But you do now.”

She heads towards the precinct, after dropping Noah off, listening to the news radio station, the dulcet tones of the reporter turning into nothing more than a buzz in the background. Her eyes lose focus as she stares at her knuckles while she turns the wheel. He'd run his thumb over the thin skin and bones last night – Elliot had; his palm resting over the back of her left hand, her stomach had swooped as her mouth had gone dry and she had stared at the place where they'd been touching. He touches her easily, now, and she wants more.

How to tell if something’s romantic: If they are or were the most important person in your life and you constantly hear their voice in your head during the important moments… If you drink from the same cup If you get a sandwich and split it in half If they rush to your side because they're afraid they lost you and seem genuinely frightened If you're concerned for them but can't stay near them because the temptation is too strong… If the lines are too blurry to even yourself. If they're your person If they feel like HOME… It's love.

She holds him here, between the cradle of her thighs with her fingers digging into the flesh of his ass. If he doesn't have half-moon marks there and she doesn't have to put bandaids on his cheek, she thinks it'll be a miracle. But she needs him to just… stay. She's trying to gather the courage to nod her head against the pillow and tell him he can finally move but it's taken so much out of her to get them here in this place she never thought she'd ever have him. Her fingers squeeze harder as she nods, “Okay.”
