📷 Hemmed-in-Hollow Falls, at about 200 feet, is the tallest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians. It's an arduous hike, but well worth it. There is an easier way, by canoeing on the beautiful Buffalo National River, but I haven't done that. #50StateJourney #Week4Arkansas. #photography

This is the Oark General Store, which may be the oldest general store in the state. Takes a bit to get there, but worth it. Good food, too! #photography

📷 I haven't done this in a while, but here's #WeirdWednesday... Since it's #50StateJourney #Week4Arkansas, it's a good day to introduce one of the weirder names in my fair state. And there are a few - towns like Fifty-Six, Blue Ball, Toad Suck, Smackover, Possum Grape, and....Booger Hollow!
The entrance to a small cemetery has a sign over it that says "Booger Hollow Cemetery." Gravestones are visible beyond it.

Despite being a hard-MAGA state, Arkansas (or Darkansas) has some beautiful sights. I've had family here for about 175 years now. Hoping for the return of sanity.

Two of the hundreds of robins that I saw at the refuge posing on leafless branches. A few dozen birds (mostly grackles and European starlings, I think) fly across a foggy road in the early morning. A wide trail through the woods with a deer in the distance looking back at the photographer.

#50StateJourney #week4Arkansas Pedestal Rocks and Kings Bluff, near Ben Hur, Arkansas, a US Forest Service managed trail area. Cool geology, seeps, plants, and the sky was clear for the eclipse in April. I don't have books for damp forest plants, so if you know this one please introduce me!
Dark pink and yellow flowers, (maybe Astragalus) on fuzzy leaved plant, found in ephemerally wet spring wooded area. Seep waterfall over an undercut rock bank with moss and ferns, early spring.

Dozens of birds landing or taking off in a large field backed by a large grove of trees. The sky is overcast, the field is green and gold and the birds are just mostly specs (but I think they were mostly Gadwalls and Mallards). A Savannah Sparrow on winter vegetation. The bird and the vegetation are shades of brown and tan. Savannah Sparrows were present everywhere you looked throughout the wildlife refuge. A lone Great Egret stands on the bank of a small creek next to a field and watches 5 other egrets arise and fly away. A Northern Harrier glides across a backdrop of mostly green trees with a tiny bit of fall color.

Driving from visiting family in Alabama March 11, 2022 we drove into some completely unexpected snow! We made it to Toad Suck and hunkered down for the night.

How could we ever forget about Toad Suck?

Today I picked some pictures to show that Arkansas is more than you think it is. The picture of the Arkansas Capitol building is at the 2016 women’s March.
An African sulcata tortoise that was found in Crowley‘s Ridge State Park after someone evidently dropped it off in the middle of the road. The park rangers kept it in the office as a pet! Wooden suspension bridge in Crowley‘s Ridge State Park. A wood and chain suspension bridge surrounded by dense green forest. The Arkansas state capital during the 2016 women’s March. We Arkansas State capital is a smaller replica of the national capital, complete with rotunda. There are hundreds of people gathered around the front holding signs supporting science, women’s rights, and LGBTQ rights. My son at a much younger age, spinning a wheel to illuminate a light bulb, learning about electricity in the Arkansas Museum of Discovery in Little Rock
