my most Gen X coded belief is that cities and the culture at large suffer profoundly for the near-complete death of alt-weeklies
I still think the best idea for progressive donors is to just revive every alt-weekly in the country and staff them with 10 reporters each.
I wrote a bit about the misguided effort by Democrats to replicate Joe Rogan the right-wing podcast ecosystem.

thought experiment: you're a liberal billionaire who wants to revitalize local news in the US for purposes of healthier media & politics. you have a very substantial but not infinite amount of money, let's say in the realm in 200-300mn that you can allocate to this purpose. how do you spend it?

we need journalists who have real problems

i would revive alt weeklies across the land and run them at a loss til i died
what offbeat but actually useful cause would you hurl your money at if you were an eccentric billionaire
And I would also rewild the Great Plains. That’s at least a crackpot idea commensurate with the scale of the billionaire problem.

THIS THIS THIS
put all that cash into alt weeklies in every city so they can keep politics reporters employed
put all that cash into alt weeklies in every city so they can keep politics reporters employed
You don't want to build a liberal news giant (swing voters don't read much political news) you want to build a bunch of just local trusted places which every year do an endorsement list for every elected office.

I wrote about the lost world of alt-weeklies, papers that loved cities *as* cities, for my splendid local alt-daily, Daybreak. “The first time I saw a stranger’s corpse was one summer night, 1992…” news.daybreak.news/p/enthusiasm...

Another thing to think about: with no alt-weeklies, there would be no Simpsons, no Fun Home, no Lynda Barry. Alt-weeklies brought the comic heat.

Just gonna say this again — journalism doesn’t need more journalists. It needs more journalism jobs. If you’re rich and want to help journalism, buy a bunch of alt weeklies, set up a trust, and fund them indefinitely.
