No "crude cuts" to welfare, Labour keeps saying. But I'm not encouraged by what Healey had to say on disability benefits.

📈 With the UK welfare bill projected to hit over £330B - surpassing total income tax revenue - Labour can't even commit to a timeline to bring it down❗️

If someone can work, we should be asking why they aren’t. Is it poor health, lack of training, unsuitable jobs, childcare, transport or a benefits system that makes taking work financially pointless? Different problems need different solutions.

We need to distinguish between people who genuinely cannot work, people who could work with the right support, and people who can work but have little incentive to take a job. Treating all three groups the same is how you end up with bad policy.

Prime Minister Burnham highlights youth employment crisis as 'economic catastrophe and moral failure'

Prime Minister Burnham highlights youth employment crisis as 'economic catastrophe and moral failure'
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has issued a stark warning about the UK's youth employment crisis, describing it as both an 'economic catastrophe and moral failure' due to nearly one million young people aged 16-24 who are not in education, employment, or training (known as 'Neets'). In a Times newspaper opinion piece, Burnham argues that the current welfare system merely provides benefits without offering support or opportunities for skills development, stating that 'benefits will become the backstop, not the starting point.' He outlines a shift in welfare approach, emphasizing that government assistance should begin with young people's ambitions rather than assessing their entitlement to benefits. Burnham's government plans to announce thousands of new job opportunities, including youth apprenticeships and placements in construction, accounting, consulting, and legal sectors. The Conservative Party has criticized the government's youth employment strategy as 'a disaster.' Burnham attributes the Neets crisis to multiple factors including two years of pandemic lockdowns, social media's negative impact on confidence, an education system overly focused on university pathways, and insufficient job market opportunities. Former health secretary Alan Milburn, author of the upcoming review on youth employment, has called for redistributing funds from welfare to employment support, noting that the government spends 25 times more on benefits for young people than on getting them into work. Chancellor John Healey has reiterated the government's 'moral duty' to address welfare spending, with his first budget due on 28 October. Shadow Business Secretary Julia Lopez has countered that Labour's policies, including tax hikes and regulatory burdens, have hindered business growth and youth employment opportunities. The review, set for publication next month, aims to provide recommendations to tackle the crisis, with Milburn stressing that 'the overwhelming majority of young people will take opportunities if provided.'

Board limits county general assistance for employable recipients to three months, approves $50 cut
After a lengthy debate, the Board approved changes to the county's General Assistance rules: a three-month time limit per 12 months for recipients on an "employable" track, a $50 reduction in the monthly benefit (keeping the county among the highest in California), and a direction to report back with cost and legal advocacy recommendations.

This is insane.

It is complete madness.

Are we not allowed even a semblance of the same kind of life as non-welfare claimants? Are we really that distrusting of people? Do we really need to be so sneering and controlling?

Labour urged to means-test disability benefits to save £8 billion and reduce support for middle-class youth with anxiety
The Daily Mail Online reports that Labour has been advised to means-test disability benefits to save £8 billion and cut handouts to middle-class youngsters with anxiety. The article discusses the potential financial implications of the current disability benefit system, highlighting that the government could save significant funds by implementing means-testing. The proposal aims to redirect resources towards those most in need, while reducing support for middle-class individuals who may not require the same level of assistance. The article also touches on the broader debate around welfare reform and the balance between supporting vulnerable populations and managing public finances. It notes that the current system has been criticized for not adequately targeting benefits to those who need them most, leading to inefficiencies and unnecessary expenditure. The government is under pressure to address these issues as part of wider fiscal responsibility measures. The article does not provide specific details on the proposed means-testing criteria or the exact timeline for implementation, but it emphasizes the need for a more targeted approach to disability benefits. The discussion is part of a larger conversation about how to reform welfare systems to be more efficient and equitable. The Daily Mail Online's coverage suggests that this is a significant policy consideration for the Labour government, with potential implications for both public finances and social support structures.
