#Welshmoor
(haven't had a chance to post...) #MarshFritillary #butterfly larvae & webs at Welshmoor #Gower 1.8.25. I think they're 3rd instar (you can just see 'forked tails' on a few). They may have moulted into 4th instar by now and gone into hibernation - incredibly early. Mid- late Sept the usual date.

Lots of Broad-bodied Chasers on the wing at multiple locations but again Welshmoor came up trumps with this lovely female. #insects #invertebrates #odonata #dragonfly #UKWildlife #NaturePhotography #MacroPhotography #photography

The other Welshmoor specialists were also in attendance today in the form of Green Hairstreaks. Tricky to spot amongst the similarly coloured foliage but well worth the hunt. #insects #UKWildlife #nature #wildlife #photography #bugsky #butterflies

Last year was the 3rd worst year for Marsh Fritillary in Wales. Glad that we found good numbers of larval webs at Welshmoor, Gower (tho not monitoring). butterflyconservation.org & nationaltrust.org

So, this Green tiger beetle at @Welshmoor. On a patch of bare soil with what looked like solitary bee nests. It turns out, they are tiger beetle larvae, who pop out of their burrows to snatch prey. Weird chitin shapes, with fat whitish maggots beneath. Wow. @SEWBReC @GowerNT

Welshmoor #Gower was so warm & sunny that the insects were too busy to pose. Did catch a Broad-bodied chaser from distance, loads of #Orchids (Heath spotted-ish) and the star of the show, Marsh Fritillary @SEWBReC @GowerNT @BCSouthWales @BDSdragonflies

Moving day for the Marsh Fritillary larvae at Welshmoor #Gower 4th Sept, charmingly spinning new webs following heavy rain. Prob 3rd instar, before final moult when they spin tight hibernation webs tucked deep in the undergrowth. @GowerNT @savebutterflies @WalesBc
