Good morning from Victoria Park and its Westrail sign (a brand that has now not existed for longer than it did exist, 1975–2000)

Went and looked at some trains today! Model trains that is 😄

You have no idea how much I want the late-70s Westrail Cafeteria table settings. Shit rules, and it's just old enough to still cater for smokers with the monogrammed ashtray

40 years ago today, on the 22nd of June 1986, the West of Ireland Railway Preservation Society (“Westrail”) operated its first mainline railtour. This was the first time a preserved diesel loco hauled a mainline passenger train anywhere in the UK or Ireland.

In Western Australia, the Liberal state government commissioned a Greater Perth transport study in the late 1970s recommending investment in highways and busways. The government listened to the “experts” and closed the Fremantle Line in 1979, promptly lost to Labor in 1983 and the line reopened.

Good Westrail heritage RE: track quality

It's funny seeing extremely accurate reproductions of the WAGR "mucky duck" and also Westrail logo for Graffiti groups in the area. Like, whoever's doing them HAS to be a regional foamer

Today, 22nd June, marks an important date in the annals of Irish railway preservation & railtours. It was on this date 1986, that Westrail operated the first mainline special to use a preserved diesel locomotive, long before such an operation took place anywhere else in Ireland or, indeed, Britain.

Today's historic pic: Westrail diesel loco Y1102 sits at Pemberton, WA, January 9, 2015. Eighteen 12-cylinder Paxman-engined Y class, built by British Thomson-Houston and Clayton Equipment Co in the UK 1953-55, were the WAGR's first mainline diesels. The last Y class units were withdrawn in 1990.

The Westrail network was privatised for 50 years for $585 million in 2000. This year, the rail network's owner earned a $132 million dividend from it. This privatisation was ridiculously irresponsible.

Brookfield scoops up $132m from WA rail networks
The Canadian infrastructure group is reaping healthy dividends from its West Australian freight rail business. But the state government wants to buy it back.

Wombat Flats (HO Scale) - Australian country-themed layout of no particular geographic tie. The thing I love about it is the long run across the front, lets things really put the scale hammer down.

Went to the rail transport museum, picked up a couple of vintage Westrail postcards to go on my wall

SHIT, TRAIN [hurried unpacking camera to catch some not-worth-showing stills then this video of the consist]

Grain train made entirely of the new wagons built by CRRC for CBH. At the head was, usurprisingly, a CBH loco and IIRC an ex-Westrail P class.

Anyway, that's some stuff

This #FlashbackFriday photo comes through the kind courtesy of Bill Haggan. Albert Sage, our former Infrastructure Manager, is seen pictured next to Deutz diesel G613 in 1991. The loco had recently arrived from our friends in Westrail Tuam.

Despite limited funds and manpower, Westrail was a truly groundbreaking organisation. In addition to operating railtours, the group preserved G class G613, which is currently at Downpatrick, and restored our own steam loco No. 90 from scrap condition back to mainline running.

Hey, we're all still good for a little extra Christmas Goodness, yes? Sure.
Let's go back to 1988 and watch one of Westrail's Internal staff news bulletin videos for the Christmas period.

With loco E428 and two of the carriages sporting the striking Westrail livery, we’re sure that a noisy red freight loco pulling a passenger train turned a few heads across the Connacht countryside.

Ideas for Aussie heritage units:

Pacific National: NSWGR, VR, PTC, V/Line, SRA, FR/FC, NRC and FV/FA

Aurizon: SAR, CR, ANR, QR/QRN, WAGR/Westrail, Interail, ASR/GWA/ORA and AWR/ARG

Any suggestions?

Wondering whether I should get real pedantic about my track: replace 1 in 4 of them with 3D Printed Ties/sleepers that look like metal ones, which was basically the standard replacement practise for Westrail in the 80s and 90s on everything but the Standard/Dual Gauge corridor (those got concrete)

Today's historic pic: Exactly 40 years ago today, Westrail diesel loco L253, on loan to VLine, prepares to depart for Melbourne at the head of a standard gauge goods train at Albury, NSW, January 7 1984. Some of the 27 L class units, L253 included, remain in service today with Aurizon and SSR.
