I caught it to get to uni in 97 and 98. With luggage was still much cheaper than flying. Discount airfares weren't a thing . I flew for first time in 99 when flight prices dropped Akl-Wgtn.
Damn, guess that makes me an 'older person' 😭 🚆

Much different, so many people travelled by train from Auckland to Wgtn was a long trip but they provided a comprehensive wraparound public service. What will people need after a 12 hour trip on a train? Let’s provide that. It was a transit stop before the ferry and they really thought about it.

Really big ones, claw foot baths I think and the hot water never ran out and the towels were large. After an overnight from Auckland in the cheap seats where you chatted to everyone and occasionally tried to sleep, it was a glorious thing to arrive in Wgtn, hire a bathroom and have a long soak.

Few (more) thoughts about Vancouver.
1. Apartments, everywhere ✅ ✅ ✅
2. Heritage areas well kept / repurposed (e.g. Granville Is.) - an indoor market should be a no-brainer (hi Wellington).
3. The Seawall bike + pedestrian path is great (for Wgtn this is what Shelley Bay - Scorching Bay should be).

Ive got a kidney stent at the moment I’m having removed along with a stone next week, so uncomfortable, but the pain when it first went down, all I can say is thank god Wgtn has a urology surgeon who looks like Biggles.

Of course that won't happen. The difference is when a firm is looking at a project and they plug in the holding costs of doing it in Wgtn vs. anywhere else in NZ and our rates make it uneconomic to build it in Wgtn so the investment goes elsewhere. We're competing against the rest of NZ.
September 29, 2026 at 7:04 PM
In the local govt sense it's much more tangible. I've sat with firms who've put projects infront of me with their pricing models for Wgtn, Porirua, Hamilton that take into account rates and it becomes an academic exercise as to why they choose to build elsewhere. We compete with rest of NZ.

*having said that, living on Queen Street in Wgtn was crazy sheltered from most winds in Wgtn, the house was a sanctuary unlike Lambton Quay

No one ever told me when we moved from Wgtn that Dunedin had wind - not one.

Thanks, very kind. Still mulling over options, have a conference in Wgtn next week I'm presenting at.

Honestly I don't mind the cold, but folk don't appreciate that ChCh & Dunners cold are different, but still cold.

Wgtn knows cold too, but that's because the bloody wind that used to fly up my shorts - lol

3 can be hard, 4 -6 is a good number, but also some rooms are way harder than others. I don't mind if our team doesn't solve it without hints, but I do enjoy the puzzles.
Some Escape businesses are better than others. Apart from ones in Chch, done a few in Wgtn, a coupls of poorly set-up ones there

My husband flew to Wgtn at his own cost a few years ago to present in front of a select committee. He wanted no business donations only indivs bc corps don't vote. Democracy is about ppl. Cap $30000 per year & every donation published. Lab & Nat agst!

How's your investigative but commonsense brain?
Process driven, rules to be followed, questions to ask, and plenty of rabbit holes. Desk based with no external calls. Combo of Wgtn CBD based & WFH in small diverse team.

Before it was killed off, I caught the Silver Fern to Wgtn. We cld order a gin & tonic & watch the scenery flash by. We caught the overnight Silver Star back to Auckland. The weather in Wgtn that night was wild & planes were cancelled, so we felt very smug. I've been on ART 2x this week. V crowded!

In all of the countless trips down to Timaru when dad got sick last year, it was really noticeable how much more expensive some products were in the supermarket than they are in Wgtn. Capsicums come to mind, they were at least a dollar higher if not closer to $2 more each

I have an extra of vermin & sheine lende (sized to hardcovers) if anyone in wgtn/nz wants one. too much effort to ship intl but I may consider putting the print files on ko-fi if people are interested!
it's been a background project of mine to take the book cover redesigns I've done over the last couple years and make them into full dustjacket designs, for my own copies!

Bay Express (Wgtn–Palmy–Napier) last ran 7 Oct 2001. I got to ride it for my 14th birthday in Jan 2001

Passenger service to Gisborne met its demise in 1988, not reinstated after Cyclone Bola. The "round the block" Palmy–Wairarapa–Wgtn passenger train met its demise later the same year

Electrifying the rest of the NI doesn’t require any change in Wgtn at all, just dual-system locos (very common overseas). The current plan is for a changeover from DC to AC at a crossing loop north of Waikanae so Wellington subbies can remain DC while long distance locos are dual-system

i was in wgtn not long ago and can confirm the mongrel mob guy seemed to feel quite safe sharing the train with me and others. i mean, on the train we're just a passenger eh. and we ride and we ride.

And the return of the proper overnight ‘Sleeper’ train between Wgtn and Auckland, so we can avoid white knuckle flights into Wgtn, and avoid suffering (frequently) disrupted flight schedules. Love sleeping on a train with a proper bed. Do NOT love flying 😐

"What I would say to you is crime is down: 49k fewer victims or is it 37k, no it's 49k no wait it's 37k. No hang on, it's...."
Meanwhile @ Simplicity Fitness Mt Wgtn, a woman is seriously assaulted.

I wonder if she's heard there's "fewer victims of serious crime"?
