#Wheelwrights
I feel like a proper historian. I just gave a 45 min lecture on the history of the wheel in warfare to The Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights

As my WEST VIRGINIAN mom always used to say about the mines: we dont have much need for wagon wheelwrights anymore either

Remake Gladiator, but every fight scene gets interrupted by advertisements for the hottest garum vendors and wheelwrights.

And wheelwrights?

Well, they serve no purpose. In other news, wheelwrights have been struggling since the bottom fell out of buggy market.

This week I worked out that I have surveyed 60 houses in the last 10 years. Of those, 42 were listed buildings. 21 out of 42 were incorrectly dated in the listing, including this one: Wheelwrights at Kelham, Notts. Listed as 17C, survey revealed it was early 15C... 1/3 🧵

While the O'Doyles were most known for their history with Akron, O'Doyle III was banned from the city after punching the fire chief through a building. He managed the Hoboken Wheelwrights from 1982-1993 until he accidentally burned down the stadium. He never managed his son.

Visiting the beautiful University of Coimbra 🇵🇹. Just as we have a St Catharine of Alexandria (patron saint of philosophers, students, & wheelwrights) in Cambridge, so too do they here

Also the wicker bier / sled. We wonder why hollow ways become so deeply rutted but a decade of trapsing a sled from a coppice to the cottage would quickly erode. Especially as wheelwrights are expensive and skilled

Which means not factories, exactly, but spaces in which the company-owned tools, materials, and spaces are housed for cooping, wheelwrights, blacksmithing, etc.
ALSO: If these towns are to feel Appalachian in spirit, they need more churches and dojos than the population can support

This very ornate Grant of Arms (1634) for the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights was recently requested by a researcher doing a project on the livery companies of the City of London. A beautiful document with its original seal. 📜

Our Wheelwrights have been mocking up a quarter-size wheelbarrow ready to make a half-size for our younger/smaller visitors to try out.
With something this small, they have to be inventive about the actual wheel...

a lot of saints are like this eg st catherine was going to be tortured on a spiked wheel so she's the patron saint of wheelwrights and craftspeople who use wheels

Around the 15th century, the English began covering their cart & wagon wheels with malleable iron.

These coverings were called "tires", either as a shortening of "attire" or a link to "tie", because they covered & held together the wood underneath.

Sometimes this was spelled "tyre".

Wheelwrights and barrel mongers would like a word.

Fun fact: the "wright" part is an old English (not Old English, I think?) term for a person who makes a thing. Hence "wheelwrights" make wheels and "playwrights" make plays. :)
